Highly experimental extensions to try out

Postby emk » Tue Jul 21, 2015 2:33 am

Purely as an experiment, I've added three extensions to the forum software. These are all highly experimental, and they may go away at any moment! But please feel free to kick the tires and let know what you think.

  1. A French language pack. You can now change your UI language between British English and French in your user control panel. This might be useful for those folks trying to immerse in their target language. If folks like this, I imagine that we could look into adding well-supported language packs for major languages. (I'd love to add as many languages as possible, but maintaining forum quality comes first.)
  2. An "Active Subjects" link. Look up at the top of your screen!
  3. A very experimental voting system called "Post Love". This lets you vote up posts by clicking on the heart. But there's a major difference: Your votes are visible to other users now.
Once again, these extensions are totally experimental, and they may all disappear tomorrow. Please let me know if you discover any nasty surprises!

Seems like you can give yourself an upvote as well, just so you know.

Yes, but if other people hover their cursor over the "1 x", they'll see that you're voting for yourself, which makes voting for yourself a bit embarrassing. :-)

Interestingly, it looks like we also receive notifications when people vote for our posts:

You can also see that I'm trying out the French language pack. It's a pretty complete translation, and I haven't seen any glaring errors yet, at least not with my non-native proofreading eyes.

I think there are some more options for the voting plugin somewhere. For example, I can theoretically show the number of votes a user has received in the mini-profile next to each post. But I haven't found the configuration options yet.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Which browser are you using? The hover feature doesn't work for me in Chrome or FF so I don't see who's voted for what by doing so. Yes, I'm also receiving notifications - which is also a great feature. Pretty happy with phpBB to be honest.

I'm using Chrome and was able to get the hover feature to work.

Sorry for any inadvertent heart clicks or un-clicks on my part, my fellow participants in this thread. I'm struggling with Chrome to get the hover to work, and not succeeding yet. (Ubuntu 14.04 + Unity + Chrome)

Love the heart feature! And the thought of more language packs is a good one!

Firefox here, hover doesn't work and I can do nada here (updating, settings etc.) as it's a shared computer in a resort.
That said, have a :D for some brilliant extensions.
