Site down briefly

Postby sfuqua » Thu Feb 25, 2016 2:10 pm

I just got the "too many users" error over and over again for a half hour.
Since I'm posting, it seems like things are back...

Same here. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought so.

May I ask what is your reason for still going to the old site? Mostly to look at old posts you found interesting?

Yes, and to see if there is anything new, but it was THIS site that was down yesterday.

This site was down again for me this evening, with the same old too many connections message we got a lot when the forum was young.

I google the old site often for info about courses and other resources, Not the google search there, which is only somewhat less useless than the built in search, but a site: search with a specific target in quotes. When I use the google search incorporated there, for some reason the results never seem to be ordered by relevance.

Yeah, I also wanted to clarify that it was THIS site (LLO) that was down briefly and not HTLAL. I'm almost certain that is what the OP was referring to as well.

Just to be clear, are we talking about the "SQL Error: Too many connections [1040]" problem, or was there another problem.

Yeah, we know about the "SQL Error: Too many connections [1040]" error. It's caused by the fact that we share a database with several other sites, and sometimes those sites get a ton of traffic. On a technical level, we know exactly how to fix this—set up a dedicated server and database—but that would push the site costs up a bit.

For the moment, the usual strategy is for rdearman to bug our current hosting company whenever the DB gets overloaded too often, and ask them to increase the number of available connections. But in any case, if you wait a while, the site should be back as soon as the traffic dies down.
