Re: Site down briefly
Yes it was this site and yes it was the " SQL Error: Too many connections." I'd just never seen the problem last so long.
I realize that I don't know where to report a problem, either on this site if it's up or through an alternate pathway if the site goes down "permanently."
This site works so well that users like me are spoiled

Admins could create a twitter account that we could go to to see updates about the site :3 Archive of our own does it and it is a great help when their sites goes down for unknown reasons.

Actually I wasn't aware there was an outage until it was mentioned here, since it was overwith by the time I logged in. However we did at one point investigate having an automated script checking if the site was available. The problem with that is that script would be constantly taking connections which could be used by people, and might even make the "Too many connections." problems worse.
For a serious longer term outage, we would notify users (via email you gave when you signed up), or flip the site over to another hosting platform within a few hours.
However you raise a good point about notifications and disaster recovery options, and I'll discuss with other admins & moderators.
