Re: Sorry for the outage! 503 Errors
Is there an external source (e.g. Twitter) where we can find updates when these situations happen?

There is... and... there isn't. There is an account on Twitter: @Llorgforum.
It was designed to alert members about just such an occurrence as recently happened this past weekend. There hasn't been a tweet from the account since July 23, 2019.
In the past, I have gone to the HTLAL site to post that the site is down. This time, I thought it was just the typical 503 error we've been dealing with over the past months. So, I didn't post there.

Thanks, yeah i checked the llorgforum Twitter account (and emk's account) and saw that the former hadn't been updated in several years and emk's account had been updated more recently, but not for this outage.
I'm happy to see it back (thanks rdearman for figuring out what was wrong!). I know the outages are pretty infrequent and generally only last a couple hours. For longer outages, though, it would be nice to have some place to check to know that the outage has been acknowledged. It could just be flashbacks to HTLAL, watching it slowly fall apart as Francois got less and less involved in the site.

I have the anki-tv.co.uk domain, where I'm currently hosting the Super Challenge bot. I'll investigate putting up a Forum Status Page on that site. So unless Amazon goes down worldwide, you should probably be able to get on to one site or the other.

Once upon a time, the Learn any Language wikia was a site to visit if this happened:
I don't think it's super active, though - the latest update was nearly six years ago:
"What's new on Learn Any Language
August 6, 2018
Dutch - English language islands (Dutch language)!"
The wikia also serves as one of the gathering places in case of an outage to these sites, along with the Facebook and Twitter pages. Be sure to check if you can't access these forums.

Re: Sorry for the outage! 503 Errors
I spend a day programming a tool to monitor the site and the database. I wrote a nice webpage that will show the status, and even chart response times and email me notifications if there is a problem.
But there is a problem. I can't host it anywhere! The anki-tv site that the super-challenge bot is running on uses ancient php, and I can't upgrade it without lots of rewriting and arse-ache. I tried hosting on my autodidactic.info website, but it doesn't play well with wordpress. So at the moment I've got it running on a raspberry PI on my home network. I'll see about opening the firewall for the PI to display the webpage. Or maybe I'll see if I can put it on another domain.
