I really like the idea of a thread of the week. I think I sometimes I miss out on intriguing or fun discussions because I don't scroll down far enough to see them. I just hope it won't be too much work for the mods.

Hi Bluepaint,
I appreciate the effort, and nothing against you personally, but I really dislike the idea. It seems like needless editorializing to me.
Singling out TOTW, chosen by one person, infringes on the idea that the forum belongs to the community as a whole, and makes it seem like Bluepaint's forum first and the community's forum second. I know that would not be your intention in a million years, but that's just how it feels to me. It feels off and I don't like it.
If a thread is particularly interesting to the community, it will get a lot of likes and comments and will stay at the top of whichever subforum it's on. This is a small forum and it doesn't take long to skim the "headlines". I don't think a TOTW feature is necessary or good for this forum.

Deinonysus has a point: if a thread really is interesting then people will probably comment on it and it will turn up at page one. However I have seen interesting threads that for some reason didn't get a reply or an update for a few days, and then they rattle down to page four or five - or disappear totally out of sight at page 6. And then few readers will ever know that they existed. But Bluepaint's proposal doesn't solve that problem, and I also fear that there might be some dissent over what an interesting thread actually is.

Hey Deinonysus,
Thanks for writing to me.
I can't say I'm not incredibly disappointed but we have to listen to perspectives othen than our own especially when they are ones we hadn't considered.
There is certainly no desire on my part to make it - or appear to make it - 'my' forum and I'm horrified at the suggestion (not offended, just horrified that it could come across that way). It was an idea I ran by the available mod-admins and the general consensus was to give it a go. The reason for not having any voting or formal nomination process was because then it takes a good bit longer to organise whether it involved the wider community or only the mods and admins (who rightly prefer not take on too many more duties on top of what they already have). It'd be x number of days for nominations and y number of days for a poll but it'd still have to be short timespans because, firstly, it would seem odd to have a past now-inactive TOTW. We could have an inactive thread if it is a super useful one but currency is a factor. Secondly, it would make TOTW a competition when it wasn't intended to be. The idea was simply to highlight some cool threads. I despise popularity contests.
My original plan was to run it for a month then review. I'll instead review it after a fortnight from its start date and evaluate whether to continue it or not.

I am afraid I have to agree with Deinonysus. Sorry Bluepaint: thank you for your efforts for making this a better forum, just know that some experiments turn out better than others.

How about putting the TOTW thread in a TOTW subforum rather than stickied everywhere?
Right now, they are not cluttering the TOP of the page. They are cluttering MORE THAN ONE page. That’s more in-the-way than the ads on theporn biology sites I visit.
I visitbiology sites LLorg multiple times a day. Say, 3 times a day. Over the last 10 days, you’ve reminded me of this interesting-to-you-but-not-to-me post about one aspect (reading) of learning one language (French), about 30 times.

The idea of a TOTW subforum sounds great to me - at least I can’t think of any reason why it wouldn’t work well.
If you want to avoid the “clutter” at the top of each subforum, make the unread posts page your landing page/favourite/pinned to phone screen icon. I never actually see the “clutter”!
It’s generally just a much more efficient way to use the forum, too - if you go in through the sub boards you can end up going to the most recent post in a thread only to find you have already read it - unless you can keep dates and times and last poster in your head for multiple threads.

Re: I don't have favourites but if I did... Joking of course. TOTW
I use the "Active Topics" page as my starting point. With one to two new pages per day that's not more than I can cope with, and I do have a reasonable good overview over the offers since I visit the forum almost daily when I'm at home. I hardly ever use the board list.
The idea of putting the favorite thread of the week at the top in one special TOTW board and not as at the top in every board plus every starting page might be worth considering - one link plus a few reasons to refer to the thread in question would suffice, and last week's proposal could come beneath the current recommendation. But how long could this thread continue before the same and the same favorites started to reappear again and again? It happens with yoghurts and pizzas so why shouldn't it happen with threads too?

Thank you for the suggestion. I do read LLorg with Unread Posts, except I go to the Logs subforum before that to read a log or two then Mark All As Read in order to streamline my Unread Posts.

I use the blue forum template, Read Threads have blue icons and Unread Threads (threads with unread posts) have red icons (the circle on the left).

I am embarrassed to say that I was never able to get my head around those circles on the left.
Thanks for the heads up. I have now just applied my brain a little and figured out some more of these bulletin board semiotics.
So,
blue = up to date read
red = not up to date in your reading
star = a subscribed thread
lock = a locked thread (ok, I’m a genius)
Maybe you can help me? What does it mean when the contents of the circle is scrolling/not scrolling? What does it mean when there is a lightbulb shape with an exclamation mark in it instead of a circle?
I have looked high and low on the forum for a guide to these symbols with no luck. Happily the use the unread posts approach has seen me through. I really handle words better than icons.
