Re: HTTPS is now enabled (it will break some offsite images)

Is there a way to embed video with https protocol or are we back to just providing links to videos? If the youtube embed feature cannot be made to work, then we should eliminate it from the post menu. There's no point in having an "orphan" feature that nobody can use. I guess I'll have to...

HTTPS is now enabled (it will break some offsite images)

You have have noticed that the site just changed from http: //forum.language-learners.org/ to https: //forum.language-learners.org/. This happened as part of another upgrade, and it became effectively irreversible before I realized it. :-/ Here's why HTTPS is a very good thing: ⋅ More and ...

Re: Odd materials at the university lessons

Aokoye, tu n'as rien compris ... je ne suis aucunement surpris. Soyez gentil. Please step back, take a moment, and think about what's going on. Are you discussing languages? Or are you discussing politics? To me, this feels like it's leaning towards politics. And it's getting personal. I appreciate...

Re: Possible brief downtime Sunday

OK, I'm doing work on the server again, trying to get HTTPS and the reverse proxy for the Super Challenge bot online. I've set aside a chunk of time this weekend to try to make as much progress as possible. My apologies for the delay. :-(

Re: The Super Challenge rules and registration 2016-2017

So the upshot of this all is after emk figures out the proxy, and I figure out the scheduler (crontab) then we'll get them all put back online. I do apologise for the delay in getting this back online. Yeah, I'd like to apologize for the delay. When we migrated the site to the new server, I found/m...

Possible brief downtime Sunday

Hello! I've finally cleared myself out from under two massive rush projects at work, and I have some more time to spend on the forum setup. My first two orders of business are: ⋅ Setting up support for multiple subdomains (forum.language-learners.org, and a different subdomain for the Supe...

Re: Learn, teach, socialize or argue?

I come here to have a peer group that assumes language learning is actually possible!

It's hard to have an unusual hobby that nearly everybody fails at. Without regular contact with other people who into language learning, it's easy to settle down to a level of mediocrity.

Re: The blog is back, too (but it needs love!)

I just care much more about consistency, to the point that I'd rather use " ' - everywhere than have a different formatting style in each post. Please do not use "-" or " - " to represent an em dash. This makes it almost impossible for me to fix things using search and repl...

Re: The blog is back, too (but it needs love!)

The -- is how you make a dash. At least it used to be how you to did it before fancy word processing software changed the length automatically. The single - is a hyphen. Yes but -- isn't a dash. If we're so keen on that, we can use proper dashes. Otherwise - is okay. Hyphen or dash depending on whe...
