Re: Two languages to C1 concurrent or sequential?

My advice is to take one of the two to solid B2 or higher and then come back to the other one. I don't believe I could have taken both Spanish and Portuguese to high levels if I had been studying them at the same time. We have some amazing learners here who are very successful with language-learning...

Re: The iguana's tale- Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Ladino

Haitian Creole I've been enjoying reading the book of articles from the magazine/journal "Boukan Dife" which basically means a barbecue fire. This journal was written in the late 1980's and early 1990's in Kreyòl. One of the things I like about this 176 page pdf (which, in my experience t...

Re: Time from B2 to C1/C2? (frustrated somewhat- seeking some feedback pls)

...Any thoughts then? I'm aiming for 3 hours a day study rotating through a course, intensive and extensive reading and listening via TV and other resources. My log now has 'target French C1 2018' in the title. Without this being an all out mad race, can I comfortably reach this level in a year or ...

Re: New member...spanish translation help

I've been looking a Globalvoices.org...but I can't find anything in more than one language. If I switch languages, it changes to a completely different set of articles. I must be missing something obvious lol...any tips? Yes, the menu at top goes to the specific language site for Global Voices and ...

Re: New member...spanish translation help

First, welcome to the forum, donkeygoatee. You managed to reach intermediate in Irish. So, you know that a language isn't a cipher code where you plug and chug words. I've seen some of the Daisy story translations because I used some of them when I was learning Haitian Creole and they had similar is...

Re: The iguana's tale- Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Ladino

... It took me a long time to realise that it was strange for us to keep our potatoes and bread in the fridge. I thought everyone did it. When I found out more about bread bins, I thought it was a thing upper middle class white people had. It was only reading your post that I realised that this was...

Re: In your opinion, is there a difference in difficulty between TV series and movies?

The biggest difference, I believe, is when training listening. I agree with the OP. A series has a certain predictability and rhythm that a film tends to lack. There's more of a chance to get used to the actor's voices, accents and speech patterns. When first trying a film or a series in the trainin...

Re: The iguana's tale- Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Ladino

Luísa Maita is amazing! And another great São Paulo based artist is Juçara Marçal and her Metá Metá. Someday I'll learn to understand this beautiful language. Yes, she is. I will also check out Jucara Marçal. Once you get Spanish down, Portuguese will be easier, but it's still not a "walk in t...

Re: The iguana's tale- Portuguese, Spanish, Haitian Creole and Ladino

Sometimes, I come across interesting tidbits about language in my twitter feed, like this one about a new typeface that combines Hebrew and Arabic scripts . Yeah, I thought it was weird too, until I read the article and watched the video. A lot of public signage in Israel has both Hebrew and Arabic,...

Re: Question on Assimil Italian

...Con: Boring. You won't be excited for studying with it each day. Your motivation to learn better be high to outweigh the general malaise this will make you feel in your heart. Also, while the grammar explained is not wrong, per se, it simply isn't thorough enough to tell you what you need. So no...
