Re: Best approach to learning more words

So a better way would be '...for an English (Romano-Germanic) native speaker to learn Russian or for a Russian to learn English?' I vote for this version ;) . Leaving out articles is a typical Russian mistake, we don't have such "strange", "unnecessary" things in our language 8-...

Re: Best approach to learning more words

It's just a rhetorical question but sometimes I wonder what is more difficult: for English (Romano-Germanic) native speaker learn Russian or for Russian (Slavic) learn English? -------- For building and increasing my English vocabulary I've used, in the first place, reading but watching serie...

Re: English Study Group

Is this group only for folks learning English? Do you want any contributions from native speakers? Yes, it would be great. I mean it is already :) schlaraffenland, MorkTheFiddle, rdearman Thank you for your contribution! :) Btw, I was in a bookstore this afternoon and saw there War and Peace in Eng...

Re: Best approach to learning more words

тачка, урод, мент, ты издеваешься Those are all brand new words to me, despite the fact that I've read 1.5 million words and know more than 16000 as per LingQ. It seems like they are all colloquial or outright slang , but Dostoyevsky certainly didn't use them, nor do they appear on Russian politica...

Re: How many years does it take to learn the second language as your native?

the “secret” dream of many language learners (myself included) of passing as a native speaker in the target language some (distant) day. I don't have such dream and I don't remember if I ever have. Of course, I want to learn my TL to a decent level, but a native-like level it's a bit different thin...

Re: Languages You Lost Interest In

I haven't really lost an interest in these languages, I just don't have a time and probably a very strong interest in them right now. The first is of course German which I was studying in school for 7 years. Even though I've used to think that it was a waste of time and the lessons were boring, some...

Re: Russian Study Group

I think Arnaud said a couple posts back that there were transcripts available. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have the web searching ability of a three year old  The transcripts https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B_a7ewMSSquGT2d2NHNSdndBNjA . The link is taken from Arnaud'...

Re: Why do people lie about level ?

If I recall correctly, Cavesa wrote in one of threads on the forum that the confidence in what you write or speak is a border line between B2 and C-levels. I agree with this. And it is one of the reasons why I proofread and spell-check/google-check my texts. I do it because I’m afraid that my words ...

Re: Why do people lie about level ?

I did find a number of mistakes in aaleks and given that his signature says to correct him I don't think it would be nit picking. I am “she” :) . And you are right - it wouldn’t be nit picking :) In my case all those A2, B1 or C1, etc are just a way of speaking and a lame attempt of assessment my o...

Re: Why do people lie about level ?

...but 'in every my post' wouldn't have been. I don't think any native ever would say that even by mistake, but i'm sure i read a study which says that children never ever mess up basic word order despite not knowing grammar so don't beat yourself up about it. I guess it's Runglish - an interferenc...
