Re: Korean - from scratch to B2 in one year

How are things going? Pretty well, thanks. I had some major life events, mostly good, that took place over the course of the past 3 weeks which kept me from studying like I normally do. I probably put in about half as much time as usual. Regarding the progress bars, I'll probably reach my goals in ...

Re: What's the fastest way to learn a new language without (any) positive transfer?

1. I use contexto.reverso.net to look for words when I wake up in the morning. (I usually wake up with a few question on how to say certain things.) I write down useful sentences in my notebook. I kind of just get lost in this site, learning useful expressions and words and writing them down in my ...

Re: Slow-cooked Korean

I hope qeadz doesn't mind me asking here, but do you guys know if there is a way to make all cards simply pass/fail, instead of 3 or 4 grading options? Also, is there a way to make all cards auto-suspend as soon as they are 30days old?

Re: Countries with the Best Foreign Language Education

The United States is pretty abysmal in terms of its ability to teach students a foreign language by the time they graduate from high school It's my opinion if you were to use this mythical "US highschool method" in European schools, the results would be similar. This post reminds me of a ...

Re: how fast can you learn an unrelated language?

How fast can you learn an unrelated language to fluency? It depends on what you mean by "fluency", and a lot of other factors. Maybe in your case, if you think you're going to put about the same amount of effort in as you did with Portuguese, you can just multiply by 2. Where did I get th...

Re: Mandarin: Beijing vs Taiwan

If a Mandarin learner expected to spend half of her time in Taiwan and the other half in Beijing, would you suggest learning one variant over the other? Spoken differences are negligible; the main difference is the writing system imo. Beijing has simplified more than 2000 commonly used characters, ...

Re: Slow-cooked Korean

it will take at least tens of hours, but probably 100+ hours to ramp up to a 'beginner' level. Based on what (I think) you've done so far in the language, I'd be very surprised if 100 hours didn't get you to B1. Were I to be able to find a way to use iTalki to continue my sessions with tutors, even...
