Re: Batur's Language Log (English)

IMG_8004.JPG Hi Batur. I've been busy travelling this last week, changing hotels every day and doing a lot of sightseeing. I've been too busy to post on the forum but now I'm not moving for the next nine days and intend to take it easier. Here's a photo of an Indonesian volcano for you. It's the mo...

Re: Learning by listening to songs

I used Anki and the sub2srs tool to slice up a series of german music videos into something learnable - basically download the video, get the lyrics, sync that in a syncing program and then sub2srs and anki. It seems like a lot of work but it is actually also the first step that I used in learning ...

Re: A forum for non-language chatter ?

I have always thought that more cultural elements to this forum would be great, not political or overly religious, but in my mind there will always be overlap between a language and its culture. After all, one of the criteria seen as crossing the boundary in language mastery is often perceived to b...

Re: Intentionally Minimizing Time Spent for Better Results

My expertise is NOT memory or neurophysiology and my interest in the area peaked a few years ago - because I came to the conclusion that the body of knowledge tends to be insufficient to provide significant prescriptive educational guidance. We are really just learning about the layers and layers o...

Hi, Adrianslont. Thanks for sharing about volcano and Indonesia. I noticed your avatar, you're relax to see the puffing smoke volcano. You must be a very unique person in real life. Do you travel a lot? Besides Indonesia, what countries have you been to? which one is the most impressive? If you don...

Re: Should I learn japanese, or maybe more practical language?

Learning a language is a lot like a live-in relationship (I'm in the mood for metaphors) - you will only have success if you spend a lot of time together and put in some regular work. And enjoy yourself somewhat. People who are not ready for a live-in relationship usually just date lots of people ca...

Re: Batur's Language Log (English)

Hi Batur. I believe Indonesia is the country with the most volcanoes in the world - about 150 - and most of them are active. Certainly it is dangerous to live too close to some of them. On my trip next week I will be staying in Central Java near, but not too near, Mount Merapi which erupted in 2010 ...

Hi Batur. I'm interested in your name. Batur is the name of a volcano and a lake in Indonesia. Have you been there? Is that where you got your name from? Hello, Adrianslont. I have never known that Batur is a volcano and a lake in Indonesia. I must go there if I have a chance. Have you been there? ...

Re: Missing a word

Hey Sophia. I knew I was being a bit abstruse when I posted my original comment but I was pretty sure smallwhite and some others would get it - and abstruse seemed a good fit for smallwhite's subtle and playful humour. The two drum beats (tom toms or snare as opposed to bass drum) and a cymbal crash...
