To Icelandics (?):

"You're Norwegian/Swedish/Danish right?"

Assume that everyone understand/speak all of those languages. Some people know Danish, but mostly because they learned it in school.

Hahahaha they're funny and the Spanish one is hilarious

Regarding Belgians... Well I'm not sure how irritating it would be, so a reply to this post might be nice.

Back in 2000 my friend and I arrived in Belgium in Bruges, (i.e. Flanders for anyone not sure, where French is not the main language) when, despite my fairly strong geographical and culture knowledge, i'm almost ashamed to admit it, but I thought all Belgians spoke French. My friend and I being young and silly (I don't think all young ppl are young and silly {i.e. a bit rediculous}, but we certainly were) were trying out our "Bonjours" all over (ahem, High Street/Canal, Flemish-villestad) town wondering why we were getting seemingly stern looks. How naïve and uncultured we were ;)

So could you irritate Belgians by pleasantly addressing the Walloons (not close to Brussels, in the heartand) in Flemish with a smile, and the Flemish (again far from Brussels) in pleasant French? Or are the cultural clashes really not that deep?

hahaha yes, I can imagine that the flemish were not happy at all :D yes, the clash is deep and especially near the linguistic border.

PeterMollenburg wrote:Edit: Alternatively: French fries are from France!

YES!!! you truly know Belgians!! haha. French fries were invented in Belgium in Wallonia and you better not disagree with this in Belgium

This is another irritation for the Wallonians: that we are french or that Wallonia is a province of France, or that we are exactly the same as French etc etc

Nokia was a Japanese company.

WHAT DO EUROPEANS SEARCH ABOUT THE UK?

european-searchgraphic-Final.jpg

AND WHAT QUESTIONS ARE WE SEARCHING FOR?

France and Italy: “What do French men like” and “Italian men in bed”

Germany: “The German stare”

We also discovered the phenomenon of the “German stare”. A quick Google search explained the perceived intense stare employed by many Germans, noted by many travellers when visiting the country."

There's that and Eurovision being crap. Oh yeah, and posting lists how to irritate Finns. I looked up several of these "how to irritate a Finn" lists posted by...Finns and I couldn't find anything good. Being relatively isolated, Finns mostly irritate each other. These lists are just wishful thinking. Why, I bet there's a Finn somewhere out there in Finn...land just waiting to tell you about Santa and polar bears and how you better take off your shoes before entering people's homes.

Finns rocking hard:

More Finns rocking hard:

I was once explaining the Danish alphabet with a Dane nearby and I told the learner, "See, you've got these letters from the Latin alphabet and then these other ones, which were stolen from Norway." The Dane was not amused.

How to irritate Germans without speaking a word: Do a poor job at parking your car. Only in Germany will you see someone get off the bus to explain to someone else how to park their car correctly.

Also, this actually works pretty well :D

How to irritate Basques:
"Can I have hot sauce with that?" - Implies that the food isn't fresh.
"I came here to learn Spanish."
Also, calling them Spanish in any way. For pros: Calling them "gallego" - that's what Argentinians call Spanish people in general, although it's the name of one of the other provinces of Spain. My husband once did that while in a temper and the reaction was a really very angry "WTF" look.

By the way, the German stare is also common in the Basque Country and they sustain it for far longer than Germans usually do.
