Do we really want to know the answer to that question, it can only be depressing!

But the russian literature is really another story, I can't open a book without being completly lost pretty quickly. The experience is completly frustrating to the point that now I have apprehensions to open a russian book. I tried to read a few pages of The Fatal Eggs of Bulgakov, and it's horrible, I understand nothing (and I'm not the only one, because the french translation of my parallel text is also sometimes incomprehensible, so the french translator also suffered, only the english translation found on the internet seems correct)
Today I've spent half an hour on that before giving up:
Непосредственно вслед за жабами, опустошившими тот первый отряд голых гадов, который по справедливости назван классом гадов бесхвостых, переселился в лучший мир бессменный сторож института старик Влас, не входящий в класс голых гадов. Причина смерти его, впрочем, была та же, что иу бедных гадов, и ее Персиков определил сразу:
- Бескормица!

It's supposed to be funny, so why do I want to scream of despair

Eh.... it was worth a smirk. I believe these books/stories are more appropriate for a language learner:

You're a smart man. If a sentence looks like a paragraph and you feel like someone's beating you with a brick when you try to comprehend it, look elsewhere and come back to it later.

Watch TV regularly - common expressions such as "where are you going" don't need special activation (especially if you're translating). I would avoid relying on subtitles.
