In the meantime, today I learned that all my favourite National Film Board animations are also in French. Of course - why wouldn't they be? It's rather sad that anglophones and francophones know so little about each other.

Anyway... here is some classic NFB Canadiana that I grew up with in English... but in French.

Le p'tit chaos (The Big Snit)
Le chat colla (The Cat Came Back)
La valse du maître draveur (The Log Driver's Waltz)
L'anniversaire de Bob (Bob's Birthday)
Le chandail (The Hockey Sweater)

Most have French subtitles.

I'm curious, are all of the people in here around learning "Standard France French" or is anyone learning and/or exploring regional varieties of France French, Canadian, African(?) or an elsewhere French? Tell! I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be interested in reading about it.

I don't really post on this thread so forgive my intrusion but I am aiming for Suisse French.. Although it is still considered standard French, there is a slight accent difference and a few different words here and there.

Just come across a new-to-me use of 'rien'.

From L'elixir d'oubli (available from Culturethèque library).

"...un rien précieux peut-être."

My favourite online dictionary tells me: "un rien de" = a hint of.

I've not read the book you linked to, but one book that is often recommended for beginners which I very much enjoyed was Petit Nicolas [Amazon.com]. These are funny short stories about a schoolboy that always seem to involve fighting and tears at some point.

Another book which might be appropriate is My Family and other animals [Amazon.com]. Again this is funny short stories, this time about a british family living in Corfu. (The english language version is/was a set book for ~16 year olds in the UK)

Since you already know Spanish, I'd suggest that you skip buying graded readers for French, they aren't really necessary with that kind of prior knowledge. French grammar has pretty much the same structure as Spanish grammar, so you won't have any problems recognising the forms once you've seen a few examples of those. Also, there is a lot of vocabulary overlap with English and Spanish, you'll pick up new words in no time.

And then jumped straight into Harry Potter with Learning with Texts. The first HP took me about 3 weeks, the second took a week - roughly the same length. Then I just kept going until I hit about 28,000 known terms in LWT. - Roughly 5000 pages. I can now read without a dictionary and did only a little Assimil and Duolingo to get me started.
