Well, I'm off to the races with a vocabulary deck made up of the Spanish and Tagalog vocabulary from the first two books I'm reading.
I even did the classic newbie mistake of doing 100 new cards today. remind me of this when I start complaining about reviews :)

Is it worth pinning this and the other threads on the SRS challenge?

I officially began yesterday as well. Here's what I hope to achieve with my four decks:

1. Improve my Mandarin listening comprehension - It's still quite bad. I'm still in the phase, where at times it seems they talk lightning-fast.
2. Broaden my handwritten Mandarin vocabulary - Both my English and Polish handwriting is essentially illegible at practical speeds, so usually I have to take notes in Mandarin.
3. Learn to handwrite in 草書 (aka "the cursive script" or mis-translated as "the grass script") - It originated as a form of shorthand, so I hope to further accelerate my note-taking with it.
4. Learn some Taiwanese Hokkien - It's an interesting language, and also my first de facto spoken-only language. On the one hand it's essentially mutually unintelligible with Mandarin, but at the same time, the similarities make it an interesting learning experience.

I'm joining as well. I'll be going for a double challenge, 20 000 new cards in 20 months spread over three languages.

Japanese: 5 000 new cards, mainly vocabulary & sentences. (250/month)
Chinese: 8 000 new cards, mainly vocabulary sentences. (400/month)
Korean: 7 000 new cards, mainly grammar sentences & vocabulary. (350/month)

My current card counts are:
Japanese: 9966 in learning
Chinese: 2229 in learning
Korean: 1242 in learning

Even if I don't make it, I'll be satisfied as long as it keeps me on track and gets me close to that goal.

I'm doing one deck per language. I'm doing mostly words that I come across during my reading; there will be an occasional phrase when breaking it down into individual words don't make sense. I also have the occasional grammar card - these cards I put in when I find that there's a grammatical concept that I need to practice.

I generally don't delete any cards, but if it's a word that I eventually get to know very well, I won't see it for a long time.

I've discovered that, at least with Russian, I can't handle a lot of new cards per day, so I'm limiting it to introducing 10 new cards to me per day. At the moment, I'm generating a lot more cards than that (since I just started using Russian in the real world) but I won't see them right away, I guess.

I'm doing a lot of new cards, undoubtedly I'm going to have to slow down when the reviews pile up. I have 450 cards in the new and learning categories. So far I've been doing my cards in bed before I get up in the morning. My again count was 88.1% correct today and I went through 176 cards in 12 minutes today.

I had to laugh - I woke up on day one and had to restrain myself from doing too many cards, myself!

I'm not really sure about the dynamics of pinning and what the implications are so I can't offer comment.

We seem to have three threads about the challenge. Is this where ongoing discussion will take place?

On my own progress, I decided that I would do 10,000 new cards on top of maintaining my approximate 4500 already on the go.

That means approx 17 new cards a day and for the moment at least I'm doing 12 Indonesian and 5 French. If my Indonesian ever gets to a stage where I am happy with it I will shift the balance to favour French.

I also listen to podcasts and audio rips of cartoons and shows. And play criminal case. And other stuff. Precious little output.

I think I can detect a slim strip of blue in my progress bar!

To make the progress bars more readable and motivating, you can maybe use 4 of them, 2500 cards / 153 days each:

All four:
610 DAYS : 7 / 153 : 0 / 152 : 0 / 153 : 0 / 152

Just first of four:
1ST QTR : 7 / 153

Code: Select all

All four:
610 DAYS[progress= ]7/153[/progress][progress= ]0/152[/progress][progress= ]0/153[/progress][progress= ]0/152[/progress]

Just first of four:
1ST QTR[progress= ]7/153[/progress]

Thanks for the tip. I think I'll stick with the single bar though - I don't really mind that it will take a while to fill it in. I was just amused by how barely noticeable it is.

I'm hitting the wall that I predicted. I wanted to have an impact quickly on my Tagalog, so I have started 750 cards...
Now the reviews are getting brutal.
I did it to myself, so I'm not complaining :?
