I'm still in; haven't missed a day yet. But I stopped updating my log because I stopped doing courses, and have nothing novel to say about the process of language learning.

I watch news and documentary programs on tv at least thirty minutes a day. I spend another 20-30 minutes a day pounding vocab and idioms into my head with Anki. I do a little reading. Once in a while I look at some grammar.

After six months of self-study, I can now watch the tv news and documentaries and understand what's going on, although missing a lot of details. I can read pretty well, and if I upload my reading material into the Readlang e-reader I get all the words.

Output is the next step. I still have not tried writing or speaking (except in my head, which I do daily). I need to learn more verb conjugation first. I'm really lagging on that, but starting to work on it.

Welcome, gpd9eq! I'll add your log to our first post.

It's good to hear from people on this thread. I am subscribed to everyone's logs so I read everything, but it's difficult to keep everyone straight, to be honest. If anyone else is still around, please check in here too.

I'd love for a challenge to be to record yourself talking because the idea scares me and I want to trick myself into doing it, but with our range of speakers, I think that's a challenge for further in the year.

How about a song-centered challenge? We can choose a Spanish language song we like, post the lyrics, and/or whatever else you want to share (English translation, what you like about it, a cool turn of phrase you want to emphasize, whatever...).

Personally, I'm not that into music, but that's usually a minority opinion, so maybe this will be a more popular activity? I can certainly find a (probably Shakira) song I like enough to share with the team.

I am still in, though with a lot less enthusiasm than initially. Finishing the passive phase of Assimil and turning back to LL Ultimate Spanish.

I have a two week trip to Costa Rica lined up in April. Will see how it goes, though since it is a birding trip with my American birding buddies, there will be far less Spanish spoken than you may think. I love Costa Rica, and have even contemplated retiring partly there in 10-15 years.

I am trying to register for the A2 DELE exam in May. I don't have to take it, but am using it as a motivator and a measure of my progress.

A music challenge sounds good to me. I have translated a few of my favorite Banda songs, but there's a lot of slang that I haven't figured out. There's a Norteño song that I like that I like that I'd like to translate. Maybe Norteño is less slang heavy, but I'm not holding my breath.

It would be fun to hear some new music and see some translations.

I keep telling myself that I'm going to start seriously working on output, but so far I just do it occasionally. I should be finished with Duolingo this week, and my plan is to replace the time I was spending on Duolingo with output. I have thought about translating my log entries and/or using writing prompts. I would like to find an e-mail penpal on a site like Conversation Exchange, but my lack of vocabulary makes me nervous.

I haven't had a chance to do this yet, but I'm aiming to do it this week.

As I mentioned, I'm not that into listening to music, but I do like dancing to music so I've chosen Bailando by Enrique Iglesias. Listening to it while writing this post has me dancing in my seat. :D

Spanish lyrics taken from http://www.musica.com/letras.asp?letra=2175722 (with one exception, noted here, which helped me with the corresponding English translation)

(Bailando, bailando, bailando, bailando)
Tu cuerpo y el mío llenando el vacío
Subiendo y bajando (subiendo y bajando)
(Bailando, bailando, bailando, bailando)
Ese fuego por dentro me está enloqueciendo
Me va saturando

Yo quiero estar contigo, vivir contigo
Bailar contigo, tener contigo
Una noche loca (una noche loca)
Ay besar tu boca (y besar tu boca)
Yo quiero estar contigo, vivir contigo
Bailar contigo, tener contigo una noche loca
Con tremenda nota
(Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh, ooooh)

Tu me miras y me llevas a otra dimensión
(Estoy en otra dimensión)
Tu latidos aceleran a mi corazón
(Tu latidos aceleran a mi corazón)

(Bailando, bailando, bailando, bailando)
Tu cuerpo y el mío llenando el vacío
Subiendo y bajando (subiendo y bajando)
(Bailando, bailando, bailando, bailando)
Ese fuego por dentro me está enloqueciendo
Me va saturando

Yo quiero estar contigo, vivir contigo
Bailar contigo, tener contigo
Una noche loca (una noche loca)
Ay besar tu boca (y besar tu boca)
Yo quiero estar contigo, vivir contigo
Bailar contigo, tener contigo una noche loca
Con tremenda nota

(Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh, ooooh
Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh, ooooh
Ooooh bailando amor ooooh
Ooooh).

I've made an attempt at an English translation:
Enrique Iglesias, Descemer Bueno, and Gente de Zona, as translated by me wrote:I look at you, my breath catches
When you look at me, my heart leaps
(My heart beats slowly)
And silently, your look says a thousand words
The night that I wish that the sun will never rise

(Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing)
Your body and mine filling the space
Going up and going down (going up and going down)
(Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing)
That fire inside makes me crazy
It's going to fill me up

With your physics and your chemistry also your anatomy
The beer and the tequila and your mouth with mine
I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)
I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)
With this melody, your color, your fantasy
With your philosophy my head is empty
And I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)
I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)

I want to be with you, live with you
Dance with you, have with you
A crazy night (a crazy night)
Oh, kiss your mouth (and kiss your mouth)
I want to be with you, live with you
Dance with you, have with you a crazy night
Getting very drunk
(Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh, ooooh)

You look at me and you take me to another dimension
(I am in another dimension)
Your beat speeds up my heart
(Your beat speeds up my heart)
How ironic is fate to not be able to touch you
Embrace you and feel the magic of your scent

(Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing)
Your body and mine filling the space
Going up and going down (going up and going down)
(Dancing, dancing, dancing, dancing)
That fire inside makes me crazy
It's going to fill me up

With your physics and your chemistry also your anatomy
The beer and the tequila and your mouth with mine
I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)
I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)
With this melody, your color, your fantasy
With your philosphy my head is empty
And I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)
I can't take it anymore (I can't take it anymore)

I want to be with you, live with you
Dance with you, have with you
A crazy night (a crazy night)
Oh, kiss your mouth (and kiss your mouth)
I want to be with you, live with you
Dance with you, have with you a crazy night
Getting very drunk

(Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh, ooooh
Ooooh, ooooh, ooooh, ooooh
Ooooh dancing love ooooh
Dancing love ooooh is what takes away my pain
Ooooh).

There is actually an "English version" as well. It's different enough from the Spanish version that the lyrics were not as helpful a cheat as I hoped they might be for a translation of the Spanish lyrics. Wikipedia calls the "English version" a Spanglish version, which seems more appropriate considering the Spanish that remains in the lyrics.

The Wikipedia page also notes that the (Spanish version) music video was the first Spanish-language video to reach more than a billion views.

And I'm now going to go watch a bunch of Enrique Iglesias' Spanish language songs on YouTube.

Here's my entry. For some reason saying Los Rieleros is a real tongue twister for me. Los Rieleros translates to The Railers. When they were putting the band together they worked in the rail yards.

Lyrics from SongLyrics.com.

Te quiero mucho
Te traigo en mis pensamientos
Mira soy hombre

¡Ajai!
¡Y énchenle mis rieleros!
¡Que bárbaros!
¿Es que no?

My translation attempt:

I love you a lot
I carry you in my thoughts
Look, I'm a man
I don't pay with betrayals

Where have they been
The vows of love that you made me?
I would calm my suffering

I love you a lot
I carry you in my thoughts
Owner of my soul
I give you my heart

Ajai!
I give you my rieleros!
What barbarians!
Is it not?
(Catch phrases appear to be common in regional Mexican music. On the Los Rieleros cd that I have, there is only one song where they don't say this.)
