Is RhinoSpike Dead?

Postby Xenops » Sat May 20, 2017 11:37 pm

I started taking requests for English recordings on the site, and there's not many requests at all. rhinospike.com

In case you didn't know, RhinoSpike is a site where you can request native speakers to correct and record their reading of your text.

Are there more active alternatives to this site?

I just recently heard about it but see that it has been around for many years. Maybe it never took off?

It looks like it had an active history, but it's past its time?

The site was never super active, but I used to use it quite a lot. Then they introduced charging for downloading recordings, which turned me off completely. In actual fact I'm not against paying, it's just that if you pay for the recording none of that money goes to the person who spent the effort to record it. For me that ruined the ethos of the site i.e. people helping each other out. Of course you can make three recordings in order to get a free credit, but a 3 to 1 ratio is not a very good deal.

I don't mind making recordings for other people, and that's what I started doing. I figured it's like the point system on lang-8.

I discovered it was busier than I thought: I thought I had literally finished the cue of requested English recordings (two). But I discovered that when you finish one, you get a second request. It's not like lang-8 where you can pick and choose which writing to correct.

Neither do I. That's what I used to do. It's when I have to do recordings for people and pay money in order to download recordings I've requested, that I feel it becomes unfair. Imagine if on Lang-8 you corrected for other people free of charge and then you were charged money to get your own corrections done...

It looks like now it only requires credits, not money. But I haven't downloaded one for real, yet.

Indeed, but either you do three recordings to get one credit which gives you one download, or you pay for the credits.
