Free parallel texts

Postby sillygoose1 » Wed Jan 11, 2017 2:35 am

Just came across a cool website by accident that has parallel texts for free: http://paralleltext.io

Hopefully getting them some more traffic will encourage them to put up more books.

You can change the format to either split view or compact view that you can switch.

Thanks so much Sillygoose!

Very useful!

I'm reading Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina from Parallel Text. The novel is a masterpiece. I can relate to it because it touches on the issues pertaining to the current social structure in India. Or, it could be that Tolstoy wrote about some universal subjects. Your website also helps me to learn English.

I read a paragraph in Russian and try to translate it into English. I don't always do it idiomatically. Reading the translation can help me acquire some of the Anglophone nuance and culture that exists outside of South Asia.

Thank you, again!

That's a very well put-together interface. I wish there was an "about" section telling us a bit about who wrote it, and why, and what the future plans are for the site.

The longevity of the site is questionable, because (as with many such sites) it seems to be built on materials in the public domain, but just because the originals are, doesn't mean the translations are. For example, I believe all English translations of Kafka's work are still under copyright in Europe, as the translators died less than 70 years ago. This leaves the site open to being taken down by publishers... depending on where it's based.

But as I said, a nice site to use, so it'll be handy as long as it's up.
