Can you help with these error messages? I'm on Linux Mint 17.3. Not great with linux.
I installed the dependencies, extracted the tar file. moved into the folder and did sh SubtitleMemorize.sh.

Code: Select all

does /home/rob/.config/SubtitleMemorize/settings.smem exist?
If it doesn't, or is copied to the wrong place it might explain the error message.
I'm completely unfamiliar with smem, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

No, that doesn't exist. Actually the directory /home/rob/.config/SubtitleMemorize doesn't exist.

The warning will displayed the first time you start SubMem: it just means that a configuration file could not be found, which will be created with the default values when you close the program.

The real issue are the following lines, which might be a Mono/SubtitleMemorize/GTK versioning problem (just a guess, though). I will look into that at the weekend.

I've uploaded a new version in the release section. This will work on Linux Mint 18 but unfortunately not on Linux Mint 17.3.

The reason is that Linux Mint 17.3 only ships with GTK 3.10, but SubtitleMemorize requires GTK 3.16 (released March 2015; almost two years ago :? ).

The original error indeed came from a outdated Mono version. Mono provides a pretty nifty tool called mkbundle which packs the project and necessary parts of the Mono runtime into a standalone Linux executable. Not only does it fix the error, but you also don't need the big mono-complete package anymore.
