Bilingual Book Publishers: A Mega List

Postby evandro » Tue Apr 16, 2024 11:28 am

This is a work in progress. I decided to make a mega list of publishers that sell bilingual books/parallel texts, divided by the target language/country of the editions*.

* You can, of course, use any entry in this list the other way around. But I am dividing this to point out what is the intended audience of the publishers. For example, the Bilingual German texts in the English version of Doppeltext website are originally written in German and not the same as the Bilingual English texts in the German version of Doppeltext, which are originally written in English.

Excellent work. The main addition to your list could be companies that have published bilingual versions of for instance Latin texts - like for instance the Latin-Danish version of Gaesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus which Gad published eons ago. But I have no idea who still publishes learned works of that kind, and I suspect that they are becoming fewer and fewer because learners find cheaper alternatives on the internet.

Czech (for Czechs or anyone learning Czech)
  • Albatros Media
English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian (books are adaptations or simplified versions of the original texts with adjacent translation into Czech)

Slovak (for Slovaks or anyone learning Slovak)
  • Vydavateľstvo Lindeni
English, French, German, Italian, Russian, Spanish (books are adaptations or simplified versions of the original texts with adjacent translation into Slovak)

I suspect that these two publishers are either subsidiaries of a larger company or have some kind of licensing agreement since many titles overlap and differ only in that the translation is either Czech or Slovak.

English

---

A related concept that admittedly takes some liberties with a dual-langauge reader is a translation of a classic or popular title. One can create a type of dual-language text by pairing the original with a translation even though the resulting pair of books lacks the convenient formatting in a dual-language reader with the right-hand page being a close translation of the original text on the left-hand page.

In any case, think of how easy it is to find translations of the Bible, "Harry Potter", "Astérix", "Don Quixote", "Alice in Wonderland", "Pinocchio", "Le Petit Prince", "Jane Eyre" or "Преступление и наказание" ('Crime and Punishment') among millions of other titles.

Interesting! Do you have maybe a link for one of such a company?

Yes, this is indeed what I do most of the time, as otherwise you end up being locked to the options offered by the publishers.

This thread has been a welcome occasion for some hours of happy procrastination.
What I've found most were bilingual childrens' books, so I'll list them first and later on the rest in a second post.
evandro, please feel free to copy the information and edit it according to your standards. (For example, I have not been able to create nice short links.)

Bilingual childrens' books

· Edition Tintenfass
(Mainly classic childrens' books in a wide variety of languages. They seem to specialize in small languages and regional vernaculars.)
The second language is mainly English, French or German.
https://editiontintenfass.de/en/catalog

· Equipo Everest
(Classic childrens' stories: These are supposed to be for children learning English, but I've seen bilingual versions for Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese, so I think those would be great for learners of those languages, too.)
I have not found one single website for the whole collection, so here are some sellers' links:

Oh my that's a lot of resources, thank you so much! I'll add them to my list when I have some time! :)

Edit: Alright, done!

Edition Titenfaß is definitely gonna get some orders from me, their multilingual version of Le Petit Prince are a great ridiculous/awesome/niche gift idea!
