Re: Getting native feedback on written language
Has anyone ever hired a tutor "on retainer" to correct writing on a "whenever you feel like writing" basis? If so, was it a good idea?

Really? Are they winding up?
Lang-8 seems pretty quiet where German corrections are concerned anyway. Not merely do most posts seem to go uncorrected, there often isn't even anybody looking at them.
They are now focused on a different project of theirs, an international chatroom Hi Native, which is supposed to be awesome as you can "ask natives about their languages". So something approximately doing the job of googling and reddit (+similar forums), while being a great procrastination tool, full of socialization and so on. But it doesn't have the Lang8 function.
I sent them an email, and I posted it somewhere on the forum recently. From the email, it looks like they could be opening the registrations again in future, no idea when.

Yes and yes, see my blog (nearly all of the articles there have been corrected by native speakers at some point), exceptions are Dutch, English, Spanish, French, Swedish and German nowadays
