I have a friend in China whose boyfriend is Italian-German, and so of course the guy is learning Chinese now. He is a beginner. She asked me to recommend a good grammar explanation book with plenty of exercises, but all the ones I know are in English. I would like to offer this person something in the language he will be most comfortable in. So any fellow members from those countries, or anyone else that could recommend me some materials? I would assume some dialogue and audio would not hurt either on top of the grammar and exercises, but these last two seem to be the most important consideration according to what my Chinese friend has told me.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you content with the New Practical Chinese Reader, that you mention in your log, and that gets so often recommended that even people not learning Mandarin know it (like me)? If so, there is a German based version.

Look into the series "unvergessliches chinesisch" by hefei huang. I have not used it but have heard good feedback for it.
