It's not necessary, it's an expletive.


Thanks Voxel. "ne" is optional then? And just for craindre?

Yes, it's optional and for all verbs, if it sounds better.

Example:
Je vais m'inscrire à ce cours avant qu'il (ne) soit complet.
With or without "ne" is exactly the same sentence.
And don't confuse with a negation "ne ... pas". Expletives don't change the sense of the sentence.

Thanks for clarifying. I think, from what I've read, optional is more often than not, likely to see "ne" expletive used, as opposed to not. Still, a rewording of this part of my note is needed. Thanks Voxel
