"De VPN haalt het asielvraagstuk fysiek de politiek in."

The VPN catches up the asylum question physically the politics. ?????

I'm totally confused with this sentence.

Inhalen can mean to catch up (of vehicles), but here it means something else. Here it means "to draw something in, to bring something in". Halen is a verb that has many different meanings when used with prepositions.

Keep in mind - the dictionary meaning of a verb is not always the sole meaning of a verb...

The bigger mystery for me is the "fysiek de politiek" part. What does that mean?

That is context-dependent; you would have to show me the entire article. I find it strange wording in general, but clearly it means they made the asylum seeker dilemma physically a part of politics - how is a mystery to me, but I'm sure that would be explained in the rest of the text. As it is, I can't tell you either.

It sounds like some bad journalistic writing to me.

Bedoelden ze misschien 'letterlijk' of 'direkt' ipv 'fysiek' ?

It is the very first spoken sentence of this episode of the TV series "De Fractie", so not much context.

Episode from the TV series De Fractie

Maybe they are implying they are physically involving asylum seekers in politics. I have no idea.

"Pas deze week liep de Duitser tegen de lamp bij een controle."

Just this week, the German ran up against an audit (or check).

I'm not sure this is the correct translation, but it is close. I assume the Dutch expression has something to do with hitting a lamp pole, but I don't know.

Interesting short article about a dog that was considered to be a sheep for tax purposes.

Original article in De Telegraaf

My Dutch has become extremely rusty, but I believe that "tegen de lamp lopen" is an idiom and simply means getting caught.
