  3. Then I go into all the foreign language forums and google translate all the posts which are in languages I can't read to make sure there isn't any racist/political/sexist/extremist posts.
  4. Then I start at the top of the forum and read each and every post checking for violations and/or commenting or adding to the discussion.
  5. Read each and every log (google translating where required) and sending a few PM's to people who are really pushing the mark. We are more forgiving in logs because it is your personal space, but still have to stop serious infractions. I have deleted posts in peoples logs, but haven't yet had to lock one.
  6. Read through all the official complaints to the moderation team to catch anything reported which I may have forgiven.

Wow! I had no idea what went into moderating this forum. My hat is off to you! Thank you for all the hard work you do to make this forum available to us. :D

Yes, it's a hell of a lot of work - thank you rdearman for your efforts.

I know how much time I spend just following the threads that interest me and quickly checking new threads if the title intrigues me - and chastise myself for not spending the time on actual language learning. Checking everything, dealing with issues, running posts through Google translate etc. adds up to a huge amount of work. It's amazing you get any language learning done!

I really appreciate that this forum is a nicer place to spend time than FB, Reddit and just about anydigitalwhere else - and that is because it's members are generally so civil, smart, fun and its mods so vigilant. Even if none of us is perfect, we come closer than many other places.

I'm not sure if this is the place for me to speak, but I also appreciate the moderator efforts on this forum. :) It was a couple of months ago when I realized how much I love this forum, when a volatile member (nearly) drove me off. Yeah, it's annoying when a thread is locked, but I'd rather deal with that than having spam bots and disrespectful people trash the place. I consider it a small price to pay for a quality community.

Thank you mods!!!!!!!! You are very good, fair and nice.

I think that people should stop being so critical about the others' posts and not report so much. It seems that people complain too often that a post is bad. I didn't know that, but rdearman and emk have said that they receive so many reports.

I just want to clarify a bit: We really do appreciate reports. Making a report is much better than starting a flame war, for example. :-) We read your reports, and we care about what people have to say. In fact, we really do rely on reports to know what's going on.

And there are some kinds of reports that we try to act very swiftly on: harassment, personal attacks, and anything that might cause angry lawyers to send letters to rdearman.

But for less serious reports, we sometimes just read the reports, appreciate them, and make a mental note to keep an eye on a thread. Or we just ask people to please stay on topic. If fact, if the problem seems to have sorted itself out before we do anything, we'll often just let things be (again, with exceptions for major rule violations as described above). When in doubt, say, "Hey, I just thought you might want to know that this thread is getting pretty off-topic and heated." We always like to know. We may not always act immediately, but we like to know.

Or to look at an another way, the reports aren't a problem in themselves—the reports are a symptom that lots of people are finding a topic tiring or stressful. And if people are feeling that way, we want to know, so that we can try to address the underlying problem.

This is actually a very friendly and respectful community, and we appreciate that fact enormously! We'd never manage to keep the forum such a friendly and useful place without everybody's help.

Anyway, I'm going to close this thread for the evening, because the moderators have said most of what we have to say on this subject for the moment. But please feel free to PM us your comments and questions!
