A language learners’ forum

What do you think about creating a subsection with minimal pairs for languages which are spoken by our users? It`s often hard to find them on the Internet and it would be very handy if we are able to find many of them here. I couldn`t emphasize enough how important is to start learning your TL from getting to know the sounds of the language.

Hmmm. That gives me an interesting idea for a website. I was already planning on creating one for Irish with minimal pairs for consonants in each of the three main dialects, as well as including a "quiz" function, but now I wonder if it could be expanded to other languages. I feel like it could very easily, with, say, a simple list of tabs, or something similar... Hmm.

It`s a very interesting idea to expand this to some kind of quizes to make a pronunciation trainer from it. I think that it wouldn`t be hard to create this if we find people eager to help. It takes a minute or two to record minimal pairs for certain sounds.

I didn't vote in the poll but I'll weigh in here in the same way I did in your previous thread. I think it makes more sense to just create another thread for this in the Language Programs and Resources section.

Something for the www. site, I think.

Minimal pairs are extremely helpful. I've voted yes.

I still dream of a high variability phonetic training game for Korean ... maybe it already exists and I never noticed, though, who knows.

Sorry for my ignorance, but can anybody elaborate on what is meant by "minimal pairs" in this case?

I'm not completley certain that the OP meant it the same, but I think that minimal pairs are two words which are the same except for one sound. It helps with the listening and pronunciation of sounds which are not different in your native language, but which are different in the language you're learning.

for example in English:

Ship / sheep (for the short and long i )

ate / hate (for the h )
