Russian spam

Postby Ogrim » Tue Mar 01, 2016 4:27 pm

I wasn't sure where to post this, but just wanted to say that I have noticed a lot of spam messages in Russian today. I've already reported some, and I see the admins/mods react rapidly, so thank you for that.

Most of them come with a longish text in Russian and then a link to sites for the illegal download of films or similar.

I have noticed those messages as well. Is it helpful to the moderators to report the spam posts?

Yes please report them. We'll remove them and ban the user as soon as we can. If you are going to report the message, you only have to report one and we'll scrub all the other messages at the same time. This assumes it is the same user. If you see dodgy spam messages for multiple users, then please report one message per user account. The reason is basically we ban the user and remove the posts, so we're really interested in the user rather than the message.

Thanks for reporting. I'm also going to cycle some new questions into the user signup so in order to keep someone from automating their spam. So any suggestions for questions answerable only by humans would be good. :) I'm also likely to extend the number of questions asked if possible. Basically I want to make it such a pain for them to keep creating new accounts that they'll move on to easier targets, especially when they determine the post is normally only there for less than an hour.

See this old thread about the questions. viewtopic.php?f=13&t=682

I nominate Arnaud  Seriously, I really do. And since that is late afternoon on the east coast of America I also will volunteer to help if needed.

This stuff was always cleared out so fast that I never saw it before.

It looks really bad right now. There are multiple bad users, and multiple weird posts.

I wouldn't have seen it if I wasn't out sick today...

I also volunteer if you need someone on US West Coast time; I'm on the computer most of the day. The carpetbombing we're getting this afternoon is totally triggering my OCD streak -- "Clean ALL the things!!!!"

I'm generally online at this time, but often watching football or otherwise doing something else. If it gets bad, like today, feel free to tweet me @serpent849, or write me on facebook if we're friends there, etc.
(today my dad gave me his old iPhone so i was figuring out how to set it up :D)
