Is there any way to make the mobile version of the forum more informative? I am a vain person (o_O) and sometimes I watch even the amount of views, or check if I got more likes - I don't get notifications about them all. I tried three different browsers in order to open the full version from my smartphone, but to no avail.
I really don't like the mobile version, the input window is too big (at least for 720x1280, 4.5"), clicking on the icon for the last unread post is almost impossible even if to zoom in, but, well, this is just me complaining, as usual :)

Wow, thank you everybody, for the votes and the suggestions!

It looks like leading candidates are:

  1. Improving the look and feel.
  2. Having a version of "Active Topics" which is split up by forum.
I just went ahead and added a longer "About Me" section to user profiles, since that was really easy and also pretty popular. And I'm delighted to see that my semi-joking option to add Manuel de Codage support for inline hieroglyphs has received 2 votes so far, neither of which was from me, I promise.

Please keep the votes coming!

Clearly, people are interested in a better look-and-feel. I think the key characteristics are: clear, crisp, sharp, vivid, and even colorful (cheerful). Bigger, bolder font will help a lot. A very important thing, in my opinion, is to NOT have an indistinct, washed-out look. To that end, larger pure-black font on a white background should be a starting point. If you can duplicate the body font of the old HTLAL, that would be great.

phpBB allows you to install multiple themes to choose from, much like with multiple languages :) so fortunately we don't have to agree on what looks nice :P

However, we should have a very attractive and friendly default look that would appeal to most new users, well before they figure out how to choose a preferred theme.

If folks would like to check out various ideas concerning the look and feel of the site, we have an ongoing discussion with several alternatives that we could set up easily. And yes, we'd like to provide at least one optional light-on-dark theme for people who prefer those.

OK, we have several new test themes installed! See the style thread for instructions on trying them out. I have to say, I'm really enjoying the "we_universal" style—it has nice prominent links for active threads and unread threads, and visually speaking, it feels so less 2007 than the default theme does. We still need to bump up the default font size, though, I think.

I've also just added two new language packs, which you can set under "User Control Panel" > "Forum Preferences".

  • 简体中文 — Mandarin Chinese (Simplified script)
  • Español Mexicano (Tú) — Mexican Spanish (Casual Honorifics)
I chose Spanish and Mandarin for our next language packs because they are two of the most widely-spoken languages in the world, and because we have an active Spanish subforum, and because rdearman asked for Simplified Chinese. :-) If you study any of these languages (and your level is high enough to use a computer in them) I really recommend trying out the language packs. And if people prefer tranditional Chinese, or European Spanish, or formal honorifics, or Japanese, or anything else, please search through the database by clicking the alphabet letters at the bottom and suggest a specific pack for us to consider.

That's two of the top-four vote getters. The other two (rich text editing and active topics by subforum) will require more research. But it feels good to get the site-deployment tools sorted out so that I can do all of this in publicly visible way.

As always, if any developers want to take point on rich text editing, language packs, or other add-ons, please feel free to kick me a pull request.

I would like to see a Scandinavian language in there, preferably Danish, but more people seem to be studying Swedish here. I would be fine with either, Norwegian would work too. Or a random switch between those every time I visit the board :D

edit:
the newest version of the Swedish one can be found here: http://phpbb.se/?wpdmdl=3358
Danish is up to date on phpbb.com
Norwegian for 3.1.3, so probably not the best choice

1) I'd like to see thread and post tags, tag search and a tag cloud.
2) a RTL block implementation.

I might be able to volunteer a little time in the future for specific projects...

(AND AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL THE EFFORT BEING PUT INTO THIS PLACE! :heartforyou:)
