Re: Tarvos' новый лог
I am now over halfway through Monday begins on Saturday by the Strugatsky brothers (in the original Russian, of course), and it's like the 60s Soviet version of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Yes, it's that weird.
Nothing in this book makes any kind of sense, but it's funny.
By the way, that would be book number 19 out of 35 this year, and with my holiday in front of me, I'm betting I can make 24 or so before June is out. So I can relax a bit the rest of the year. Hah!

This book has been popping up repeatedly recently. I'd never heard of it before this month. I've just removed 26 books from my ridiculously long 'to read' list, as a reward I should add this one to the end.

Re: Tarvos' новый лог
I think my to-read list is about 30 books, so removing 26 would practically be removing the list - or reading them all. (In my case, the latter is more likely).
I might be able to finish this book before I leave on Monday. Well, 70 or so pages left, that's doable in two days.

All packed up and ready to go for Bratislava! I'm leaving tomorrow already (I am doing some tourism along the road), and unlike everybody else I have a bit more luggage space because I'm travelling by train (oh, the luxuries of living on the European continent... and a refusal to dirty up the airspace, hah!)
I've prepared my best Czech and Mandarin (and all of my other languages) for you all. Don't be afraid to say hi. I don't bite. I'm the really tall lady with too many languages on her badge. (I'm taller than Lýdia Machová, and that should tell you something).

Re: Tarvos' новый лог
I'm back. The Gathering was fantastic, more info on that later when I am not extremely tired.
Shanghainese is my next language for after the Gathering, but it won't be as intensive, mainly because I also have to move house at the end of the month.
Busy gal, all that, yadda yadda yadda. The other bit of good news is that all my train journeys and so on have led me to finish 6 (!!!!) books over the past two weeks, meaning that I have completed 25 books this year already (out of a goal of 35), and I've got enough to finish up for the rest of the year.
So far, I have read books in almost all of my languages (except Hungarian and Mandarin). Here's a list of the number of books per language:
English 2
Dutch 1
French 3
German 3
Russian 3
Spanish 2
Romanian 2
Swedish 1
Esperanto 1
Italian 1
Portuguese 1
Czech 4
Greek 1
Left (for sure) to read are:
Spanish 3
Czech 2
Greek 1
Russian 1
Romanian 1
Swedish 1
which would get me to 34. I have more on my to-read list, but in those cases, I don't actually have the books at hand. Also keep in mind that the Spanish books are all >500 pages each (about 2000 in total), and that the Russian book is also over 500 pages. In fact, there is still a huge amount left for me to read - if I had chosen my books more wisely, it would have amounted to more stories for the amount of pages read, but hey...
And keep in mind that the no. 1 language for this year isn't one of my native languages - or even one of my top 5 languages, but Czech!!!! And even including the books to be read, that would still be the case - only Spanish would really gain a lot. Completion of the 35 would probably involve me having to read Mandarin as the missing book, or just getting a book as a present - which could be in any language really. But given this distribution, suddenly my language skills make a lot more sense as my reading is very evenly distributed over all languages, and Dutch actually doesn't figure very prominently at all. (It never really has since my teens - English was always more common).

Currently reading in Spanish and watching a TV series in Mandarin. And no, I don't want to do much else right now. I'm fine with my current pace.

Re: Tarvos' новый лог
A translation of part of the article about gender in Mandarin into Mandarin. Or well, not a translation, but more a rewritten version to allow for my very dodgy Mandarin grammar and ask a few questions at the end.
But it's in Mandarin on my blog.
