BAnna's Log-2016 Turkish with sides of Spanish & German

Postby BAnna » Mon Jul 20, 2015 3:24 pm

Have been quite inactive on HTLAL for awhile and have recently decided to remedy that...and then of course it just wasn't there. :?:

The community has rallied and come up with this alternate (lovely!). Thanks to all for coming to the rescue!

I've dived back into German again, and still have Spanish on the back burner, but I'm afraid I've abandoned Russian and Turkish for now. I do hope to come back to them eventually.

German: still haven't resat the C2 writing exam, but hope to do so in early 2016. Meanwhile am taking a C1 class to freshen up the grammar fine points I sorely lack, have been watching movies and Tatort episodes, reading books and news. Latest book read was Der Traum des Kelten, by Mario Vargas Llosa, a fictionalized biography of Roger Casement who was hanged for treason for trying to get Germany to provide arms to the Irish Republican movement during WWI. This was translated from Spanish into German (don't know why I didn't read it in Spanish...). Lots of vocabulary and literary grammar, but it was not a compelling read. I think I'd started it two or three times in the last few years and gave up on it, but for some reason, I decided to restart and push through it. Also am currently listening to an audiobook, Ich bin Malala, about the Pakistani teenager and political activist who was the target of an attempted assassination by the Taliban and survived.

Spanish: finally finished watching the Columbian telenovela Dr Mata and doing some reading. I think there were something like 58 or so episodes. Latest book read was Misión Olvido by María Dueñas, the same author as El tiempo entre las costuras. It was a light read, good at times and silly at other times.

Probably the best thing about the German class I'm taking is that I'm writing and getting corrections. Hurrah! Yes, I know I should be internally disciplined enough to write things on my own and post them on Lang8 or elsewhere, but without the discipline of a class, I just don't do it. So far I've written 2 short essays (2 pages each double-spaced). At last, I hope to make progress in my writing skills, and the class is fun: good people and a great teacher. :D

Re: BAnna's Log-German & Spanish

Postby BAnna » Sun Jan 17, 2016 8:03 pm

Here are a few things I'd like to accomplish in 2016:
(Will update this post as I make progress through the year).

1. Keep up with posts from La Manada TAC Spanish team and participate as time allows. July update: Haven't done this one, alas.

2. Read in Spanish and German, whatever catches my interest, possibly even do some grammar exercises :?: Possibly, but unlikely, will dip back into Turkish* or Russian. Unfortunately, I've already read both the Spanish and German Book Club selections here, so I'm on my own...July: As far as study, my focus is completely on Turkish. I maintain Spanish and German speaking with family & friends.

DE:
Russland Verstehen von Gabriele Krone-Schmalz http://www.zeit.de/2015/08/gabriele-krone-schmalz-russland-verstehen 176 S.
Naokos Lächeln von Haruki Murakami 416 S. (Translated from Japanese)
Das Testament des Herrn Napumoceno von Germano Almeida 173 S. (Translated from Portuguese)
Baba Dunjas letzte Liebe von Alina Bronsky 160 S.

TR: (July update)
Ezel TV series.
Book: Türkçe Okuyorum

3. Do reading challenges to expand my horizons beyond what I usually read.
July update: Finished the Read Harder Challenge http://bookriot.com/2015/12/15/2016-book-riot-read-harder-challenge/
Also on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/152441-book-riot-s-read-harder-challenge
Will do most of this reading in English (L1), but maybe also a couple in Spanish. The goal is to read 24 books each from a different category.
Also joined the Middle East/North African reading group on goodreads, so may end up reading some authors in Spanish or German if no English translation is available. Too bad my French is almost non-existent, that would have been of help  https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/413-middle-east-north-african-lit

4. 16 in '16: Watch films in at least 16 different languages. I was originally thinking of doing 16 films in each of 16 languages, but realized that would be a bit insane. I'll only count one per language and only put films below that I enjoyed.
Arabic: Halfaouine Child of the Terraces (Tunisia)
English: Brooklyn (Ireland/UK/Canada)
German: Iran im Herzen
Japanese: Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Norwegian: En ganske snill mann English title: A Somewhat Gentle Man
Polish: Sztuczki English title: Tricks
Russian: Овсянки English title: Silent Souls
Turkish: Kış Uykusu English title: Winter Sleep

5. Also am doing the Short Story Challenge here:
Goal: Read 20 stories in Spanish and 15 in German
Books to read: (Both are aimed toward English-speaking intermediate level university students)
DE: German Stories Deutsche Erzählungen: A Bilingual Enface Anthology
ES: El cuento hispánico: a Graded Literary Anthology
July update: on target.

6. Did the Feb 6WC in Turkish. Hadn't studied it in forever, so I felt like a beginner all over again. Did a bit over 70 hours of study, using some resources from the library and some I bought (including a German-Turkish coursebook "Kolay Gelsin" and a coursebook from Turkey "Yanancı Dilim Türkçe" ). July update: I have basically become obsessed with Turkish and am enjoying spending lots of my free time with it.

7. Have signed up for the Super Challenge in both Turkish and Russian, just to keep me active in both languages. I have no expectation that I will make much progress towards the goals, particularly in reading... July: I am making progress in Turkish, haven't really touched Russian. I may withdraw from the Russian challenge, but will leave it for now.
