Sol's New Russian & Korean Log

Postby Sol » Sat Apr 01, 2017 9:17 pm

Old log here.

My life has done several flips over the past few months, but usually I've been able to keep up with my language learning. Unfortunately in January I took a (with the risk of sounding like a special snowflake) traumatizing job which put a stop to languages for 3 months. Thankfully around the first week of my new wage slavery job I discovered a business idea. I made enough money to be able to sustain myself for ~5 months, and left my torture-chamber job.

Whilst walking home the first thing that came to mind was "I can focus on languages again!" and was filled with a lot of joy and relief, which really proves that you cannot be happy doing something you have no passion for, for 9 hours a day, having no time for your actual passions. I spent 3 months too run down, miserable and busy for anything other than work, dreaming of the day I could get back to what I loved doing.

I feel like I need a fresh start, so a fresh log too! Another reason I'm starting a new one is because my old one was very wishy-washy. I kept jumping between languages and getting distracted. German, Mandarin, Spanish. They're great languages I want to visit again someday, but no matter what language I pick up, I always end up craving Russian and Korean. So I will put as much effort as possible into them to get at least a high B2 before I start something else.

So here we go. Languages, resumed!! <3

Funny story! I decided to check out the iTalki website and... it was in Korean! I've never visited iTalki on this computer... I wonder if they find out somehow what language you want to learn and automatically change their interface to that language.

Anyway I was thinking of doing one iTalki lesson a week on Korean or Russian (maybe I can cycle them) but since I'm a massive beginner in both, I don't know whether it'll be worth it.

On a sidenote, despite not studying for 3 months, my Korean has actually...improved. I can understand more and words seem to stick. It doesn't feel like a completely alien language anymore. My Spanish, which I haven't touched in probably 10 months, doesn't seem to be weakening at all. I can freely understand spoken and written Spanish. I might just book a trip to Spain for a month and get myself completely fluent and be done with it haha!

The same happened to me a few weeks ago! (I'm also studying korean, by the way). It is weird to try to navigate the site while in korean, but it is also a very exciting oportunity for practical learning.

The same has recently happened to me with japanese! It is weird, but awesome!

I think it may be because of this: Incubation (psychology)

Hello guys! Whew, that was a stressful month, but I'm back to languages! Today's Korean lesson was on question words like 어떻게, which I'm familiar with due to dramas!

I also bought a whiteboard and a some markers so I can write more and try out sentences without worrying it'll mess up my notebook.

I'm also really excited about Eurovision tonight, all those languages

Aaand today marks the day I finished my first notebook for Korean!

You can see that I started learning on the 11th July 2016, and finished it exactly 10 months later on 11th May 2017. However it's more like 4-5 months since I took some months off during my hell on earth stressful job.

Korean has honestly been the most fun language I've ever studied. I've never had so much fun learning languages before, it doesn't feel like a grind like other ones do. Maybe it's because the alphabet is extremely easy but foreign enough to make me feel like I'm solving a massive puzzle; it's just so fun to write or listen to and even the grammar is cool. I can't believe I put it off for so long in order to study other "more useful" languages.

Anyway, after I finish this chapter I'm gonna have to focus on learning the numbers and dates. I'm terrible with those in any language!

Also, I thought it would be fun to show how my handwriting has changed. These are some of the first sentences I wrote (more like copied):

And here is the progression. I wrote these at random times along my journey:

Wow. Even your first example is way better than my current handwriting!

Sol님의 끌씨가 예뻐 보여요~ 매일 공책에서 문장들을 많이 만들었어요? 전 요즘 공책에나 메모지에 손으로 글을 안 쓰니가 점점 미워지는 것 같아요.

Really? :o
I just write a ton in Korean. I write out everything and make a lot of notes, partly because it's the best way to remember something, but mainly because I just love how it feels to write the letters! It's so pretty!

고마워요! 저는 매일 한글로 써요.
I apologize if there are any mistakes! I write a lot but I really need to start constructing my own sentences and getting them corrected too! Writing more will absolutely help, you just kind of naturally start writing "smoother" and forming your own style (though I'm pretty sure I write some letters wrong. The letter ㅂ will forever frustrate me!).

Todays Hour of Korean™ flew by as I learned to say important things like:

몇 시예요? - What time is it?
너의 남동생은 몇 살아요? - How old is your younger brother?

We still haven't learned how to ask "and what is his number?"

And I got to crack open a new notebook:

Image

I was seriously confused with the counters at first as I haven't studied them for months. So much content has been covered, my brain hurts thinking about what I've forgotten!

Here's a great list of counters though.
