Right now it's a race against time, I am starting an intensive university program in September and will most likely not have much time for languages, at least while in school. As well I will be working full time come summer. But I get what you mean. ;)

EN: Basically saying I want to use this log as a reason to use and practice by Italian, not just to report in English (although I still will). Had an italki class today that I was less then impressed with. I will stick to the two italki tutors I've been using. As well I did all my regular things. HP, listening to podcasts, more reading, etc. Also that I have decided to push French back at least a month so I can keep my focus on Italian. Maybe I will push it further into the future come May, we will see.

Just got back from a week in Mexico. Not much Italian although I did understand more than I thought I would of Spanish. Didn't use too much though. I will have to learn Spanish sometime down the road, it's a very useful language, especially in the Americas.

IT: Dopo la settimana senza studiare, ho dovuto tornare in pista. Prima, ho iniziato a utilizzare l'app "Hellotalk" dopo scoprendo lo qui. (ho dimenticato dove).

EN: I had to get back on track after a week with no studying. I decided to try Hellotalk which I found out about on this site. It's great and in many cases the people I've been talking to are more happy to speak Italian than English, even when I insist they should get a turn practicing. I had some more italki sessions, Sunday and yesterday and I have one coming up in a few hours. Still looking for a language exchange partner on there as well.

My progress from low intermediate to basic fluency is annoying and talking long (as I expected for a first foreign language). I really want to start another foreign language but it is probably not a good idea at this time.

IT: Beh, aprile è quasi finito e sento che ho studiato molto.

Sto ancora usando l’app Hellotalk.

EN: April is almost over and I feel I have got quite a lot of studying done. First off, I have started to use a new resource that maybe some of you have heard of, lingq. I've read many different options about this resource on the old HTLAL site, but I have personally found that the site works very well for me, despite a bit of initial confusion (the site format especially is very daunting for anyone new). However despite this, after a couple of hours playing with the site, I found it to be a treasure trove of learning resources. I really like that the site counts known words and that there is an automatic dictionary. Beats looking every word up in a dictionary any day. I've got about 1600 known words now on the site.

As previously mentioned I am still using Hellotalk, the problem is that I am ONLY chatting with people on Hellotalk and not really SPEAKING with any people (aside from italki). I figure as it stands now 90% of my production is through text/email/whatever and only around 10% is speaking. This means that my speaking is extremely poor for my level of reading. I am really feeling the pressure to get to B2 by July but I am not sure this will happen. I don't think I speak enough as it stands, maybe if I had a month in Italy... (lol, won't happen)...

On a more positive note, I have finished the second season of Family Guy, without subtitles! I am starting the third season now. I am also working away at the HP books and I have finished my first round of listening to the 100 or so al dente podcasts I put on my iPod, but I will go through them at least one more time as my listening comprehension grows.

Hi Nathan

While the sentence in parentheses needs additional work, it looks like someone corrected your first paragraph. How did you conclude that problema was feminine? Problema, tema, teorema, sistema, poema, diadema and some other words ending in -a are masculine. You've made several avoidable gender errors in the 2nd and 3rd paragraph. Let me offer a couple of tips:

Write in simple sentences. You may even wish to write the sentence entirely in English prior to translating. Also, do look up individual words and longer chunks. So, look up "the problem is that," "without subtitles," "on a positive note," and "the third season" on a site like linguee. Read through all the possible translations and choose something appropriate. If you are not satisfied with the choices, don't choose randomly. Rework your sentence. I would avoid expressions like "working away at" sth. that may prove problematic to translate.

Thank you for your reply reineke, I really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to help me. Yes, you are correct, my first paragraph was (mostly) corrected. I put the whole text on lang-8 but only got the first paragraph corrected. I have never heard of linguee before, I checked it out and it seems to be really useful. As well I will try to avoid from doing word for word translations of more idiomatic english sentences. Seems like I've got a long way to go yet...

On a side note, why not put your languages in your profile? You seem to be fairly proficient in Italian and have a good grasp in a few others from a look through your log.

Sorry, Nathan, I cannot reveal my superpowers. My learning history is fairly atypical and I cannot easily estimate my skills. I am not an active language student anyway. I would take these self-evaluations with a grain of salt. If you would like to test your abilities in Italian try Dialang later this year and talk to a reputable tutor.

IT: Questa settimana ho letto 'Il Piccolo Principe' in italiano.

Ciao!

EN: This week I have read 'The Little Prince' in Italian. This book was very easy to read, much more so then the Harry Potter series. I read this book on lingq, making it very easy to look up unknown words. I recommend it to everyone learning a language, as it is a brief and a cute little story. Now that I have finished this book (although I will return to it in the future), I will probably start to read 'The Adventures of Pinocchio' in it's original Italian. And of cource, I am still working away at the third Harry Potter book. I have tried to listen to audio while reading this book but it wasn't a very big success, and I found I lost to much of the meaning of the story.

I have now read 30k words on lingq and I know around 3500 words, although this number is increasing at around 200 words/day. I am also keeping busy with italki and I try to get in 2-3 lessons per week. Well, I must go now but heres a small update for you. Ciao!

Pinocchio is not an easy read. "Cuore" by Edmondo De Amicis is easier.
