25-26 April 2017 (Tues-WEds)

Cebuano / Bisaya / Binisaya - some speaking

Spanish

Duolingo - 20 pts a day minimum - nearly all gold

2.5 hours lyricstraining

All of kids Spanish songs done on Beginner and Intermediate - ok scores (I think).

Few odd ones / dictation.

Checked against some Shakira songs I did on Monday and I think I got higher scores on Wednesday, which is good.

Cross post from lyricstraining one.

Last few days up to 2nd May 2017...

Spanish lyrics training.

Jesse & joy is great. Very clear lyrics.

If anyone wants to add me then private message me.

I'm not very competitive and compared to most here, my skills are basic.

But I find a little competition or at least comparison useful. I don't feel the need to win or want to be too outclassed!

I'm trying out this system now.

Prosody (50 repeats of a phrase)
Lyricstraining new easy (green track) beginner then intermediate
Thinking method (Language transfer) one track
Repeat.

I need more prosody tracks which I need to make.

With lyrics, I'm trying to do new tracks mostly, returning to some favourites as a check, and hoping that a higher personal score will cheer me up when I'm tempted to stop!

Got in touch with a Cebuano teacher but unsure of prices and at the moment I want to get my spanish to a sustainable level. But maybe June or July. Skype lessons. I want to have a few weeks back in cebuano before lessons. Get back to where I was.

Otherwise I speak a bit in cebuano and odd thoughts and phrases through the day. I don't have many (any) of these in Spanish.

Spanish

Aim is to get to a sustainable level. Ideally so I can do normal things like TV/ books in Spanish plus apps. Then Keep it there until course in October which is only basic anyway.

If (when) I start a mainstream language again...
Eg French /German

Prosody
Lyrics
Language transfer
Duolingo
10000 sentences
Other apps
Clic-books bilingual quiz books
Junior Masterchef tv
History tv
Other tv
Bible 3 books mark, Luke, Matthew L-R

Usable on phone in a casual/stop-start way is best, I don't get much time I can dedicate or access to PC.

Not so useful for cebuano or Tagalog.

Tagalog is long term as I want to avoid interference with cebuano and Learning materials will improve over time.

2/3 may 2017.

Cebuano

Not much. Some talking in and outside the house. Renewed conviction by me and wife to speak more. Still unsure of when to switch back from spanish. I seem to have an urge to switch languages just when I'm getting somewhere. Not a push from the current language but a pull from the other. Ideally i would do both.

Spanish

Quite a lot.

Lyricstraining. Jesse & Joy mostly. Good scores from me first time and other people on high scores. Very clear lyrics.

I'm doing all the green (easy) Jesse and joy songs. Might go back and do orange (harder) or switch to another artist.

Philosophy is to get the Spanish sound probability mapping and grammar embedded.

Ie every language has different (new) sounds which change due to speaker, gender, region, emphasis, where in the sentence. I need to have these sounds in my mind for different speakers and acquire an understanding of probabilities as to what sound/letter is said/sung.

So practice with different songs/people. Extensive listening. I don't dwell on one song as long as score is reasonable. Otherwise I learn the lyrics and not the differentiation of sounds.

Done some thinking method/Language transfer Spanish and prosody.

Watched locked up (via a vis) Spanish prison TV series on all 4 / Walter presents. Not sure how many but probably quite a few /hours. Half reading English subtitles (hard to avoid), half listening.

Updated: 13 watched

Keeping Duolingo gold.

Good amount of time spent. Slight but noticeable improvement. Tiny bit of Spanish floats into thoughts.

Binges are good. Listening is good.

6-15 May 2017

Been ill!

Cebuano

Very little - some in house, but less than I need to keep up to level. No no learning for some time (March?)

Spanish

Not too much done, just duolingo (with one day problematic as duolingo and app were playing up). 70 days duolingo 20+points a day, just increased target to 30pts.

But that's not where I want to concentrate, but still not 100% well yet. So I'm relaxed, will pace myself.

When I get better

16-25 May 2017

Cebuano

Tiny bit in the house, but pretty automatic within a small vocab.

If my mind wanders when I'm tired, it's much more likely to be Cebuano rather than Spanish that comes into my mind.

Spanish

Duolingo and a bit of Thinking Spanish up to 31/90 I think. I don't make many mistakes on Duolingo, but I'm aware of the limitations of the sentences. Listening comprehension is much better now, as is speaking (from text into microphone, no production by me).

Tiny bit of wikipedia reading in Spanish, I mostly get the context but it's not deep study.

Bit of Shakira in the car, I get bits of it, but not that much.

Bit of trying to read spanish e-books, quiz book and the like, but nothing really grabs me - I'm not at a high level and nothing is so motivating that I'll power my way through incomprehension.

By the time I get "free" time, I'm pretty tired and end up watching English TV or just sleeping.

Bit of a slump at the moment. I might have some free time coming up - so maybe an intensive phase is possible.

Maybe some lyricstraining, prosody and thinking spanish - but I've been saying that for a while and not done much.

Plus eventually bible - 3 books Listen-Read. I did 4 books for Cebuano in 3 weeks, so Spanish should be easier.

Sat 27th May 2017

Cebuano.

Small amount when visiting others.

Gamay bisaya kanus-a magkita mga Tao.

Spanish.

Just some Duolingo to get me towards level 17.

Alguna Duolingo hacia nivel siete diez.

Sunday 28 may 2017

Gamay og bisaya sa Balay.
Small amount of cebuano in the house.

Español

Quite a lot.

Level 39 of 90 for language transfer / thinking Spanish.

82 days streak on Duolingo.
Now at 32% proficiency, 10500 points, level 17.

Started L-R spanish text/audio Bible.

Mark chapters 1 to 4.

Huge amount of new words. What is good is that the audio is in long sections so you get to hear rhythms etc.

Monday 29th May.

Spanish

Mark chapters 5 to 11 inclusive (16 chapters in Mark). So 30% of Mark to do.

Possible to do luke in 4 days and Matthew in 7 so all 3 in 2 weeks which would be great. But some busy times ahead, so maybe not.

Audio flow and matching to text better. I can speak in my head as the audio plays, reading the text. I may mistakes but better.

Getting some of the harder sounds.

When I get lost in the L1 read, L2 listen but I can usually get back on track easily.

Biggest problem is the different versions of the Bible. Mismatches on meanings, words and sentences. Sometimes the sentences or clauses are reversed.

Overall I like it because I can keep up a good work rate.

Work rate is my Achilles heel (my biggest problem).

Anything which helps is great.
