I'm not sure how accurate can be such a test, but maybe Spanish could turn into a study option this year.

I'm also impressed: although I haven't opened a grammar in almost ten years, I still remember subjuntivo

It rhymes with congiuntivo... :) I'm glad you found the DELE thread useful. Try the DIALANG language diagnostic tool. Your written English is excellent.

So you know...

Yesterday I tried to listen to a couple of French YouTubers. Although I got the gist of their funny stories I can understand no more than half of what they said. I really lack vocabulary (and left French twenty years ago, after l'ecole moyen). But I can easily read a text, again because written language rhymes with Italian.

Urrà per le lingue romanze! :D

Re: French in Action Leçon 2

Postby shandra » Thu Mar 02, 2017 7:30 pm

J'ai lu et vu la première leçon de French in Action. (Well, #2, 'cause the first it's a mere introduction to the course).

It was a nice and strange experience.

This course is 30 years old, so people interact in an old fashioned world (the way they smoke freely, ride in two on a motorbike without helmet, or drive without seatbelt).

It's a dive into the past.

If I take time to think, I fear that for me Frenchmen are still the ones I watched in La boum with Sophie Marceau :o

Here a note from the French Study Group Les Voyageurs
Carmody wrote:French in Action textbook:
-the first edition has 323 pages.
-the second edition has 612 pages.

The course consists of
Text book
Instructor's Guide
Wkbk Parts 1&2
Study Guide 1&2
Audio Programs
Test Banks

So I am reading FIA's first edition and watching the videos. I don't have workbooks nor any audios.

I am a false beginner (and Italian), so I understand a lot. I've just finished Lesson 6.

I'm trying Duolingo, but it is quite boring.
I study French through English so all I do is translate basic words or sentences in English :(

I also listen to French radios, catching some sentences here and there.

I don't know how long I will keep my French activities.

Maybe next step will be FSI's phonetic course to avoid internalise bad pronunciation and reading a novel to experience vocabulary in context.

Or to start a brand new language :?

French

I am reading La pyramide rouge by Rick Riordan (the one of Pearcy Jackson, but this time gods are Egyptians). I understand enough to enjoy the story.

I am Level 7 of Duolingo, or 24%.

I'm taking a break from French in Action due to lack of time, I hope I will go on with the course this weekend.

English

I've watched 13 episode of How I Met Your Mother season 1.
The real benefit of having English as L2 is I can choose among tons of TV series muahah

I've just tried Lesson One from FSI French Phonology (about 45 minutes of listening and repeating activities).
I can't say it was funny, but probably useful.

I'm not sure I'll go further with this course because I can't use the site LiveLingua effectively through my tablet.
I don't know if it impact only my Nexus7 or if it is a responsiveness issue, but I need my desktop to see the ebook on the left and the audio files on the right.
It is a pity for lazy people like me.

Well, now I am more aware about how French sounds work and alarmed enough about that deprecable habit of pronouncing many different words in the same way in spite of their ending syllables :x

Understand real spoken French will be a real challenge :o

I'm listening to a French radio. If I really pay attention I can understand almost 50%, c'est pas mal.

I'm not sure if I'll start studying French seriously.

However, as you may guess, I'm dreaming about books and I've already picked CLE's Grammaire and Vocabulaire Progressive series as my possible purchase

I am at 43% with Duolingo, 4 lessons from FSI French Phonology, and half book (Le pyramide rouge).
