Some disappointing news… My husband doesn't want to continue the beginners ASL class. I can't disagree with him that it's not a great class for him — it was supposed to be for beginners, but over half the class has previous experience and the teacher is mostly teaching them, leaving the true beginners behind. It's also only an hour once a week, whereas he'd prefer more class time.

He says he'll look into ASL 101 at a community college — but that will have to wait for the fall, when they offer it again.

I'm going to keep up my own studies with LifePrint and the Green Books series for now, moving on to the "Lingusitics of ASL", YouTube, and in-person meetups.

But this is the second time I started the year with a study buddy who then backed out. Maybe the lesson here is to recognize that most other people aren't quite as into language-learning as I am ;) so I should make plans expecting to end up studying on my own again eventually.

I think this is a pretty good lesson. Especially if someone has just started learning a language, there's a good chance they'll give up within weeks.

I've done essentially no language study in the past couple days… because I have a mild concussion(!). :( Don't hit your head on furniture, kids!

The doctor doesn't think its bad enough to be scared, but it does mean that I've had a headache and have been quite tired for several days now. He says I should slowly improve.

I did pick up "1984" auf Deutsch, and I already have the original English in Kindle form, so yay DIY bilingual books. :)

No Spanish, French, or ASL updates.

[critic]J'ai lu « Fantastique Maître Renard » . Mes archives me dit que {~~j'ai le ~> je l'ai~~} lu en 340 minutes, ou 5 heures {++et++} 40 minutes. Il y a 118 pages. C'est à dire {++que++} je lis une page {~~chaque ~> toutes les~~} trois minutes. :P

;))[/critic]

Professional fighters tend to lay off sparring after a concussion. Can you avoid furniture for 3 months? :-)

I stumbled across #365daysoflanglearning on Twitter, and from there found my way to Stefanie Zweig's Tumblr of daily language-learning challenges. I'm not going to do any crazy-heroic attempts to catch up to today, but I am going to go through them as I have the time and inclination. :)

#365daysoflanglearning — Day 1
  • Level I: Learn greetings or introductory phrases. (e.g. Hello, how are you, etc.)
  • Level II: Learn language-related phrases. (e.g. I don’t understand, could you repeat that, etc.)
  • Level III: Learn conversation fillers. (e.g. Well, anyway, etc.)

ESPAÑOL Level III
- pues, bueno, a ver*, vale*
- mira, fíjate que
- entonces, así que, resulta que, es que
- o sea, es decir, quiero decir
- este, em
- ¿me entiendes?, ¿sabes?*, ¿vale?*

* Creo que estas frases se usan más en España que en Latinoamerica. ¿Cierto?

The main thing is that classes should be fun and rewarding for both of you. I've felt a little out of place myself in classes from time to time, sometimes because I felt like a misplaced toothbrush in the cutlery draw, and at other times because there was a personal mismatch between my way of learning things and the teaching style. For example, I found it quite uncomfortable doing pair work with advanced native speakers in my elementary Hawaiian classes (i.e., with students who were there simply to score an easy A for the foreign language requirement of their degree). It's not very motivating when someone half your age and many leagues above your level fires off a merciless machine-gun barrage of words at you and sighs impatiently while you struggle to sew the basic fabric of a sentence together to serve as a blindfold.

With regards to ASL, you can always practice and learn signs together with your husband at home (there are loads of great resources online!) My wife and I were really excited about learning a sign language together at the start (mainly so we could communicate with our little daughter earlier), but after she witnessed me gobbling up 300-400 signs on the first day (yes, I know...silly me!), I think I probably scared her off studying together. She does use a small set of the most useful baby signs with our little 'un on a regular daily basis however, and I make a special effort to sign and simultaneously talk with her from time to time, so hopefully she'll pick up a few signs this way too.

PS Sorry to hear about the bump on the head; I hope you're feeling better now. :)

While I prefer learning on my own and via conversation with native speakers, my husband has said that he only wants to learn via traditional classes. That's why I was excited when he signed up for the ASL class, and disappointed when it didn't work out.

Thanks! It took a little over a week, but I'm finally ~90% better. :o
