I listen for a few minutes at a time to "konnektor, a magyar videójáték podcast" just to let me eat get over that initial "shell shock" stage of hearing a completely foreign language. When I listened the first time, I only caught the words igen "yes" and nem "no".

Today, I heard several more words that I've been learning via Pimsleur! It's a teeny-tiny milestone, but I'll take whatever successes I can get before the end of the month. :)

I'm not a native speaker and my Hungarian is far from perfect, but as nobody has commented on this so far, I just wanted to say that to my ears, your Hungarian pronunciation sounds really good! One thing I noticed that seemed to be a bit off was the intonation in the question. In Hungarian, the intonation in questions without question words goes up one syllable before the last syllable and drops again on the last syllable.

Thank you for the feedback! Even fellow students' is more than welcome, especially for a less "popular" language. :)

Yeah, I'm definitely struggling to get the question intonation right. I know that's how they should, but for some reason I struggle with doing it in practice. The answer is probably just "more practice". ;)

I feel you. I've studied Hungarian for a couple of years now and still don't (always) get the intonation right... Especially in the beginning it was frustating, whenever I asked Hungarian native speakers something, I had to add a "that was a question" to the end to even get an answer.

Tiredness or distraction has such a huge impact on language ability. I think I personally measure "near-native fluency" as including the ability to have unexpected conversations while feeling very tired or ill.

I'm pretty conversational in Spanish, but my ability tanks once I'm tired.

As for Hungarian, in my good moments I have fun exchanges of words. Otherwise, it's embarrassment or frustration (that I still kinda enjoy, because I'm a language nerd, I guess?) ;)

("Cross-posted" to the April vocab challenge thread.)

I learned 373 Hungarian words in April! My (arbitrary) goal was 300, woohoo!

It's been helpful to have some words to string together to throw at people while traveling here. It's true that many people in Budapest speak (just enough) English, but even in my short time here there have been a couple instances where they didn't, or a well-placed Hungarian word to support their weak* English has been very useful.

I wish I'd learned even more Hungarian before my trip, but with a full-time job plus other relationship & personal obligations, I'm pleased with what I was realistically able to accomplish.

*"Weak" isn't meant judgementally, just objectively. My "Me Jane, you Tarzan" ;) Hungarian doesn't give me any leg to stand on as far as judging weak language skills. :P

Is Hungarian going to be a permanent feature of your log now? I get the feeling from some of your other posts that you've become hooked.
