Drive by posting to share my excitement that I understand most of "News in Slow French", some of "Choses à Savoir" on the first pass, and a fair bit of it on the second pass! For how lazy my actual studying has been this year, I'm very happy with my progress.

Re: Arthaey's Once & Future Log [ES/FR/FI/DE…]
Sadly, I've really done very little further French study. But whatever, I'm still happy with where I am, and I have a fair bit of interesting native content now to dip into as I want to. So it's all good.
For 2017, I'm going to be getting back into ASL. I've updated my ASL resources post. More suggestions are welcome!
I took a very basic class at work back in... 2013? and went to a couple Deaf meetups. I've forgotten most of the signs I learned, but I do remember the fingerspelling alphabet and the general linguistic concepts of how ASL works.
I also plan to learn one of the forms of written ASL: ASLwrite. I know written sign language is very niche, even controversial among some Deaf folks, but regardless I'd like to learn it. It will help with taking notes and study flashcards — plus I just think it's cool.
One unexpected thing is that my husband is going to take a beginning ASL class with me! 6 weeks, starting at the end of January.

Today's focus wasn't foreign language but rather a "foreign" writing system. That is, I did another unit of the Gregg Shorthand Anniversary Manual. It's kinda language-y, right?

2016 By The Numbers
169 hours total. For the whole year. Ouch. (On the plus side, I did find & start a new job, and reconnected with my husband & friends after a year away, so it's not like I did nothing in 2016, just less language things than I might have wanted. )
Spanish Skills Breakdown:
French Skills Breakdown:
* I track "speaking" to myself separate from "interacting" with other speakers.

Re: Arthaey's Once & Future Log [ES/FR/FI/DE…]
January 1st – 5th:
Like I mentioned elsewhere, I have a problem with flitting from book to book (also other resources) as they catch my interest, without ever finishing any of them. I wish I stuck with them more... So I'm trying out picking a single resource per language at a time to focus on:
: ASL: Linguistics of ASL
: ES: El Ministerio del Tiempo
: FR: Fantastique Maître Renard
: Gregg: Anniversary Manual
[tags: #tagResourcesASLwatch]
- I've done some good catchup on my Anki cards that had been piling up. But Anki's sync is down right now, so I can't get it updated from my phone to my laptop to get better statistics to share, except that I spent 36 minutes over the past 4 days at it.
- I watched 15 minutes of ASL videos on YouTube. I especially liked ASL Stew. If anyone has other non-lesson, non-song ASL YouTube users/channels to recommend, please do share!
- Listened to a news podcast in Spanish
- Read & wrote a French forum post here!
- Did units 1 & 2 from the Gregg Shorthand Anniversary Manual.

I may or may not have just translated el paisaje as "the thingamajiggy" while doing my Anki cards tonight... Hey, I promise I was picturing a landscape!

That's how my mother talks. She'd always be telling us kids to "go get the thingamajig." And we'd say, "Where is it?" "On top of the whatchamacallit, next to the thingamabob with the whatsit." We were good at mind-reading when we lived at home.

It works, when you know or can see what the person is about to do, and know what they still need for it. But then ... you don't actually need words for that.
arthaey, do you also block on cognates and loanwords between French and Spanish?
When I read el paisaje and translation, my brain went Landschaft, landscape .............. wait ............. le paysage.
Now, when I tried to type el paisaje I typed el pay ... el pai ... el paisage ... el paisage ... el paisaje.
