Thai 6WC Day 22-24

108 minutes memrise
111 minutes of YouTube Thai cooking show: อร่อยสร้างภาพ 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 & 27
52 minutes writing short sentences

271 minutes total

I've been working a lot this week and am too tired to study so I do easy things like memrise and the cooking show. One thing I've noticed is that the more of these cooking shows I watch the more words I recognize.

Italian

I couldn't get into Storie di Stinchie e ... as it was too heavy and too many words I wasn't familiar with so I went back to one I had glanced at a couple of months ago. It's called Vini, amori by Camilla Baresani & Gelasio Gaetani D'Aragona. Baresani has written a number of books while D'Aragona makes wine and has written wine reviews and at least one book about wine. It's an easy read though rather strange. There are many chapters that my Kindle says are 5 minutes each (I've yet to see one show a number other than 5). Each chapter starts with an illustration followed by a vignette by Baresani and ending with a short review of the wine featured in the vignette by D'Aragona. I find myself enjoying the reviews and have learned some new Italian wine terminology but I don't find the vignettes very compelling.

Italian

memrise: 2841/11980

film:
5 episodes of Fog & Crimes: No Sign of Stopping, A Doll's House, Parental Rating, False papers & The Secret Room

italki: two hour sessions with pro teachers

book: 35% of Vini, amori (about 80 pages or so)

Thai 6WC Day 25-28

129 minutes memrise
86 minutes of podcasts
120 minutes of tutoring
17 minutes of YouTube Thai cooking show: อร่อยสร้างภาพ 28
23 minutes of writing sentences/words

Summary for Week 4 of 6WC

237 minutes of memrise: 1093/2259
86 minutes of podcasts
120 minutes of tutoring
128 minutes of YouTube Thai cooking show
75 minutes of writing sentences/words
646 minutes total

I was not in the mood for Thai this weekend so my loose goal of averaging two hours a day fell quite a bit for the fourth week of the 6WC. But I am still pleased with my progress overall.

Re: Lingua's Italian & Thai Log

Italian

memrise: 2968/11756

Book: Continued with La civiltà della forchetta: Storie di cibi e di cucina. I'm about half finished. The book is mostly easy to read and interesting to me but somewhat disjointed and repetitive at times.

italki: Had two one-hour pro sessions. It seems that I'm improving my speech as both of the teachers for these two hours told me I had a large vocabulary and one told me I had a good accent. My experience with Italians is that they are overly complimentary but I feel like I've been more fluid lately so I won't discount their comments.

Film:
Palermo Connection: Episdoes episodes 5 & 6 (which concludes the season)
Inspector Vivaldi: Silent Witness, Last Exit & The Third Equation (which concludes the series)
Don Matteo: The Stranger (first episode)

Thai

6WC stats for Week 6:
209 minutes of memrise: 1130/2259
81 minutes of podcasts
77 minutes of Thai for Beginners app (answering the quiz questions)
120 minutes of tutoring
271 minutes of YouTube Thai cooking shows (อร่อยสร้างภาพ & Iron Chef Thailand for Kids)
90 minutes of writing sentences/words
848 minutes total

I found the Thai Iron Chef and Iron Chef for Kids on YouTube. The kids on this show are darling and they speak much slower than most adults so I found individual words a lot easier to understand. I was getting a little burnt out on อร่อยสร้างภาพ and needed a change.

Today was the last day of the 6WC and I ended with:
1289 minutes of memrise
712 minutes of podcasts
367 minutes of mixed activities: Thai for Beginners app, reading/translating, short video viewing, etc
600 minutes of tutoring
983 minutes of YouTube Thai cooking shows (อร่อยสร้างภาพ & Iron Chef Thailand for Kids)
322 minutes of writing sentences/words
4273 mintues total for the six weeks

This equates to a total of 71.22 hours for an average of 1.7 hours per day. I had hoped to average closer to 2 hours per day but I'm still happy with the amount of time I spent. I realized that I was not spending quite as much time as I had thought on Thai. I found some new resources and mixed things up a bit more. I will do the next 6WC in November. My goal between now and then is to try to write every day even if it's only for 10-15 minutes and continue to mix it up so I'm doing different types of activity each day.

I finished La civiltà della forchetta: Storie di cibi e di cucina by Giovanni Rebora. It is a historical look at food. While it is divided into categories it still felt disorganized and redundant so I wouldn't recommend it. There was a bibliography at the end of sources for the information that I'll use to find other possible books to read as this is a subject I am interested in but this one wasn't quite what I was looking for.

Italian

memrise: 3016/11963

italki: Had three one-hour pro sessions.

Film:
A Case of Conscious: The Fourth Wall (which concludes Season 1)
Don Matteo: A Routine Operation, The Courage to Speak & The Bad Apple

Most of the Italian films that I watch are through MHz Choice. I've gone through over half of what is available in Italian and plan to finish it up over the next month or two so I can cancel the service. Then I will start in on my extensive DVD collection and some free RAI online. I plan to start a new book today or possibly go back to one of the many I've started.

Thai

memrise: 1320/2280

tutor: a two hour session of mostly speaking short sentences and focusing on pronunciation.

Film: Iron Chef Thailand: Iron Chef Kids EP3 Audition

Outside of the above I spent about 15 minutes each day writing sentences changing only a word or two such as the color or the item. I need a lot of repetition with Thai. My memory is not as good with Thai as it is with Italian.

Re: Lingua's Italian, Thai & Latin Log

Postby lingua » Fri Sep 23, 2016 12:41 pm

I found a Latin mooc taught in Italian through UNINETTUNO. I had already decided that whatever language I focused on next was going to be done using Italian materials. I plan to do one lesson a week via the mooc and then study the concepts. I listened to the first lesson and was happy with the way the professor expressed himself. He spoke clearly and I understood him perfectly. The downside is the didactic materials included in the class are limited so I've also purchased Wheelock's and a couple of other books as supplements. The interface itself is not nearly as good as edX but it will have to do. There are several other Latin moocs available but they are taught in English so I can always take one of them later if I feel that I need some review after completing the UNINETTUNO course.

Re: Lingua's Italian, Thai & Latin Log

Postby lingua » Sun Sep 25, 2016 7:49 pm

Italian

memrise: 3014/9496

italki: Had three one-hour pro sessions. I enjoy these sessions a lot and find that my fluidity in speaking is improving week by week. The only exception is when I am tired I have trouble remembering words which I know is normal. I use a lot of different teachers from all areas of Italy and whenever I have a new one I seem to have trouble understanding them until I get used to their style which takes only a lesson or two.

Film: Homicide Squad: Blood Ties & Lost Game
I like this series but there are only six episodes so I will go through them quickly and return to Don Matteo.

Books: I have read about 65% of Io sono di legno by Giulia Carcasi and intend to finish it today. I also started reading a grammar book that I found on amazon called L'uso corretto delle preposizioni by Romina Zanello which has exercises included and is geared towards B2-C2 level. I am that much of a language nerd that I like to read grammar books.

Started Unit 4 of the Beginning Italian class at edX which I am planning to finish by next weekend. So the point of taking a beginning class was to find out where my specific weaknesses are so I can work on those areas. So far I have realized that I have two areas to improve. One is my use of prepositions where I sometimes use what makes sense in English but is wrong in Italian. And the other is when to use passato prossimo vs imperfetto. In some cases it's obvious but in others not so much. While I can be understood even when I choose the incorrect tense I prefer to speak correctly.

Latin

memrise: 12/140

mooc course: Lesson 1 : letters, pronunciation & spelling
This course has 24 lessons so my intention is to do one lesson a week unless I find some of them more difficult in which case I will take two weeks. I am in no hurry to complete this course or even learn Latin.

Books: Wheelock's Latin, Schaum's Latin Grammar & two Practice Make Perfect books: Basic Latin & Latin Verb Tenses
The books are supplemental to the course. I will use them to review the points of the weekly course lesson. I have read some reviews that Schaum's answer key has a lot of errors but I doubt I will do the exercises. I found the grammar explanations more straight forward in Schaum's then in the others. I want to be able to read and understand Latin rather than speak or write in it.

Thai

memrise: 1320/2408
I had a lot of words come for review this week so my numbers didn't change much

tutor: a two hour session where we went over new grammar and practiced sentences. We are just about finished with the Thai for Beginners book so in anticipation I purchased the Thai for Intermediate Learners which only uses transliteration for new vocabulary words. I am glad to see that since it is a crutch.

I slacked off on Thai this week because I have been more busy then usual this week. Thai and I don't mix at all when I'm exhausted. I plan/hope to do more this week.

Re: Lingua's Italian, Thai & Latin Log

Italian

memrise: 3030/9519

italki: One hour session this week.

Film: Homicide Squad: Charade, Crime for Crime, The Doves Man & The Suffering City.
This mini-series was pretty enjoyable until the last episode. Then it became a bit ridiculous and overly dramatic.

Books: Finished Io sono di legno. This was about a mother and daughter. The mother wrote about past and present while she read the diary of the daughter. It was an easy read though the characters seemed a bit sad as if they were just going through the motions and not getting much joy out of their lives.
iosonodilegno.jpg

Latin

memrise: 22/140

mooc course: Lesson 2 : roots, stems & endings
Evidently the course is not complete as there are now 30 lessons (an increase of six from last week). They also added a list of books to the course but they are mostly older and not available on Kindle so I won't be buying any of them. This lesson also went over the cases nominative, genitive, dative, accusative, vocative & ablative. There were a couple of exercises included that I was able to easily complete.

Outside of memrise & listening to the course I studied the grammar points presented in the lesson using my various latin books as reference.

Thai

memrise: 1329/2408

tutor: a two hour session where we went over new grammar and practiced sentences (which is what we always do). Last week the grammar was family members and this week professions.

film: Thai cooking show อร่อยสร้างภาพ #41

My Thai goals were not met at all. I need to get back to the podcasts and daily writing.
