σημαδεύω (κάτι) (σημάδεψα, θα σημαδέψω): to mark, brand (sth), scar (smb)
η απόπειρα (κατά τη ζωή): attempt (on smb's life)

Week 5, Day 1 of the 10-Week 1000 Word Challenge:

πενιχρός -ή -ό: meager, scanty, poor
η σύνταξη (χρήμα): pension
καταστρέφω (κατέστρεψα, θα καταστρέψω): to destroy, ruin, wreck; to deface
θυμωμένος -η -ο: angry
ευγενικός -ή -ό: polite, gentle, courteous
ουσιαστικά (επίρρημα): essentially, mainly
προσεύχομαι (προσευχήθηκα, θα προσευχηθώ): to pray
σώζω (έσωσα, θα σώσω): to save (person, money, file to disk)
ο χρηματιστής / η χρηματίστρια: stockbroker, financier
η τάξη (σχολείο): class, classroom
η σύνδεση: link, connection, affiliation
η συγκίνηση: emotion, excitement
το υποκείμενο: subject (grammar, patient in clinical trial, conscious being)
ο καθρέφτης: mirror
αδύνατον: impossible

The family of σώζω (= to save) gives English the fancy soteriology, which is the study of how religious salvation works.

Στρέφω just means "to turn, direct," so καταστρέφω (= to destroy) is a "turning downward" or "turning worse."

άναυδος -η -ο: speechless, mute, dumbfounded

φασαρία comes from the Italian fesseria (= stupidity, nonsense).

The family of μαντεύω (= to guess, prophesy) gives English mantis and all of the words having to do with divination or the supernatural that end in -mancy, like necromancy, cheiromancy, and so on.

I had a quick glance over the word list and wondered if κίνημα had a place in the etymology for cinema (also Kino). It turns out it does because κίνημα also means movement in the physical sense.

I also have the word κίνηση somewhere in Anki, which can variously mean motion, traffic, or initiative, depending on context:

Παρακολουθούσα απ' το παράθυρο την κίνηση του δρόμου.
I was watching the traffic on the road through the window.

Έκανα την κίνηση και της μίλησα.
I took the initiative and talked to her.

There's also ακίνητο, which means property, real estate.

Week 5, Day 6 of the 10-Week 1000 Word Challenge:

ξεκάθαρος -η -ο: clear, unambiguous, apparent
τα γυαλιά: eyeglasses
είναι για γέλια και για κλάματα: he/she/it is pitiful, tragicomic
το γέλιο: laughter
για φαντάσου!: well, look at that / well, what do you know?
τον/την/το πιάνω στα πράσα: to catch smb red-handed (lit. to catch in the leeks)
το πράσο: leek
με πιάνουν τα νεύρα μου, όταν: it gets on my nerves when
πιάνω την καλή: to win big, "win the lottery"
η κουβέντα: chat, talk
περιέχω (περιείχα): to contain
η αιτία: cause, reason
προδομένος -η -ο: betrayed
προδίδω / προδίνω (πρόδωσα, θα προδώσω): to betray; to reveal
λιώνω (έλιωσα, θα λιώσω): to melt; to dissolve, crush (sth) (λιωμένος)

In case you were wondering, πράσο (= leek) does indeed give rise to the color adjective πράσινος (= green).

I learned the verb λιώνω (= to melt) via this 90s rock song I found browsing the Greece subreddit:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ulm6P9IP-s (λιωμένο παγωτό = melted icecream)

Week 5, Day 7 of the 10-Week 1000 Word Challenge:

η περιέργεια: curiosity
γραμμένος -η -ο: written; covered in writting
το ημερολόγιο: journal, diary, logbook
νόμιμος -η -ο: legal
ανθυγιεινός -ή -ό: unhealthy, unhygienic
η συμπεριφορά: behavior, attitude
αποθέτω (απέθεσα, θα αποθέσω): to deposit, store; put down, lay down
αστικός -ή -ό: urban; civic, civil
η επαρχία: province (region); countryside
η ύπαιθρος: countryside

It's odd that I didn't immediately understand περιέργεια (= curiosity) by already knowing περίεργος (= strange; curious [inquisitive]) but I think it's because I learned the latter word as meaning "strange" long before I learned that it also meant "inquisitive," so that meaning isn't as firmly anchored in my brain yet.

Total words so far: 570
Anki miss rate for today: 7.65% (5 / 65) (6.03s / card)

Halfway through my little challenge but a bit more than halfway to my goal of 1000 words in 10 weeks. It's looking like 100 words per week is a pretty sustainable pace for me!
