I've been back from Sorrento for a bout a week now. The holiday fell in the two weeks above. I did take a Japanese book to read and Hugo's German to study but there wasn't time to so much as open either!

As for the studying that did get done ... Well I managed to activate all of the iKnow sentences in my deck, so now I just have ~10,000 reviews to see to :-) My main words deck has ~1800 words left to review but the sub-deck that I'm actually actively working on now is all caught up.

I've found a reasonable source of Japanese drama with Japanese subtitles (and sometimes English subtitles) available. Often only a few epsiodes of any one series are available, but as it takes me so long to work through them, that's OK. So once I finished コールセンターの恋人 I started on ヤッさん. Only the first episode is available but it's taken me 90 minutes of effort to work through the first 12 minutes of episode, so I'm good for now!

In my tutorial before the holiday we'd been working through the emperor's "thinking about abdication" speech. There was obviously no tutorial when I was away and there also wasn't one the following week (because of the bank holiday) so I'm planning to finish working through it next Monday and then get back to みんなの日本語中級.

As there are no Japanese lessons at work, we've all been meeting in the same room and working individually during Tuesday lunch times. So far I've just been doing bits and pieces but this week I worked through bits of "500 Essential Expressions". It's a bit like 新完全マスター, except that the layout is a little different.Working through it with no help and no dictionary and no internet was quite eye-opening, so I'll have to find some time to review what I've done so far and fix up the lacunae. I've also tried a bit of Power Up Your Kanji, with similar results.

My reading of NHK News has dropped off a bit in the last few weeks, so I'm going to make a concerted effort to kick start that (i.e. it's the next thing I'm going to do today as soon as I finish this update!).

Completely unrelated to my log, really, but I've never seen Life of Brian in Italian so this brief Latin lesson had me in stiches.

German progress

Just noting that I've now completed Hugo's German Week 2. I still need to review the vocabulary more thoroughly, but I've made a start on that too.

A bit of a slow week this week. I've not yet got back into the swing of things after the holiday. I didn't start reading NHK News until Friday and I hardly watched any drama. I did keep up the anki reps.

I finally finished working through the Emperor's speech in my tutorial, so back to みんなの日本語中級 next week.

My kanji/vocab anki deck is now less than 900 reviews behind, but I'm still concentrating on the みんなの日本語中級 reviews, so I'm in no rush to catch up completely. My sentence deck is about 6800 reviews behind; again, I'm not too bothered by that as I'm getting plenty of reading practice working through a few hundred sentences each day. I've been getting N3 sentences reviewed at my tutorial so far, but I think I'm going to start on the N2 sentences from 日本語総まとめ 文法 (although not next week, as I've had to cancel that one thanks to work commitments).

I have been reading through NHK News. Not as consistently as I'd like, but I have read at least one article most days and on some days I've read all 7 from the main page.

I've gone back to working on dramas. I found a single episode of ヤッさん along with Japanese subtitles and worked my way through it. It took a while but by the end I had a good idea of what was going on. I have the whole set of episodes of another drama, 偽装の夫婦, ready to go. This time I have both English and Japanese subtitles available. However, in the meantime I've started on エースをねらえ! , which it turns out was based on a famous manga. So I'll get through that one first (I'm sure ひろみ will succeed, but you never know ...).

I'm still working through みんなの日本語中級 during my tutorials but, since I keep finding other things that I want to work on as well and bringing those to the tutorials, that's slowing progress through the book. But then it's not about getting through the book, so that's OK.

I guess that proper update never happened!

So what have I been doing with Japanese?

Well anki is still going strong. My kanji deck is now back as one deck and fully caught up. I'm about two chapters ahead in みんなの日本語中級. The sentences deck has about 3200 sentences waiting to be reviewed. However, I'm going to be working through those slowly as anki is chewing up about an hour a day overall. That would be OK if I got out of bed early enough to get 30 minutes done before heading for work, but I'm not that disciplined :-)

As for みんなの日本語中級 I'll be finishing Chapter 17 in my next tutorial, but my tutor won't be back until next Monday. Until then I've been previewing Chapter 18 and also making a start on 日本語総まとめ N2 文法. For that textbook, this time around I'm tackling a chapter a week, taking along the completed exercises to my tutorial to double check my translations. Some weeks I'm getting two chapters done.

I've almost finished a new drama: エースをねらえ!. Turns out the drama is quite well known - well my tutor remembered the manga at least. I've watched every episode twice: first without subtitles and then with. I'm going to have to decide in the next few days whether to re-watch this drama or work through 偽装の夫婦, for which I think I have both JP and EN subtitles. I am also mostly keeping up with ふるさと再生 日本の昔ばなし - I've watched the first 235 episodes (although there are some deliberate gaps on crunchyroll.com).

NHK News reading has become sporadic again, but that's because I have a new book: エルマーのぼうけん. The Japanese teacher who teaches the lunchtime class at work offered to bring in some books from her kid's school's end of term sale and this was one of them. We're going to work through it as part of a Japanese reading group at work (which happens on a different lunchtime). The book was originally published in English as My Father's Dragon. It's fairly straightforward to read (so far) and having the original English version only a click away on the web helps. Perhaps unsurprisingly after reading みんなの日本語中級 for so long, having few kanji and mostly kana can be a bit of a pain at times!

The animated version of Aim for the Ace! was dubbed into French, Spanish and Italian. It's a fun series.

I may try out the anime version sometime. I certainly enjoyed the drama, even though if anyone had tried to sell it to me beforehand on the basis of the storyline I think I'd've passed.

So what have I done over the last two weeks? The kanji words deck is under control and the sentences deck is slowly coming under control. I want to cut down the amount if time I spend in Anki so I'm going to let the sentence deck stabilise naturally and only add maybe 10 new sentences a day. Hopefully by the end of the year it will be down to 15-30 minutes daily.

I've finished watching エースをねらえ! and now I've started 偽装の夫婦. I've watched the first episode with and without subs. So far the language seems to be not as hard as I was expecting. There are still certainly sections where I get lost, but then I get back into it. It's good to have challenging stuff mixed in with the easier stuff. I have Japanese subs too, so for the 3rd watching of Episode 1 I'll try with J-subs. After that I'll start working through the episode line by line.

I've got back to reading some NHK News but that's been at the expense of エルマーのぼうけん. I think I'm going to have to set aside 30 minutes each evening until I just get through it.
