I forgot to say that I've decided to give edX a ago.
There's a course for Japanese pronunciation.
The course is in Japanese but there are transcripts available (JP, EN and other languages) so I cna listen in Japanese but have English text scrolling by the side. I spent about half an hour on it today and I've found it to be quite enjoyable. Whether I'll learn more from listening to Japanese and trying to understand it or from the course contents, I don't yet know.
I think if I'd signed up earlier (or paid money) I could have got a certificate at the end and maybe an individual assessment, but I'm happy to just bumble along for now and see what happens.

Re: dampingwire's 2016 TAC - JP & DE
I've not written much about German mostly because I've let it languish in the back seat for quite a while.
I've been through Pimsleur I during the return commute and I'm repeating most of Pimsleur I at the moment.
I don't know why but I just can't get into Hugo's German in 3 Months.
I'm thinking of grabbing Begegnungen Deutsch als Fremdsprache A1+. This looks like it is all in German, which is fine. My main question is should I get the version with 2CDs? What will I miss if I don't? Obviously there will be the pronunciation of the vocabulary, but forvo or similar will sort that out. Is the book closely tied to the CDs or are they an adjunct?

Re: dampingwire's 2016 TAC - JP & DE
I wasn't aware that there was a version of the Begegnungen textbooks without CDs. Do you have a link or ISBN to hand so I can check it out?
In any case, I think the CDs are worth having, just so you can get your money's worth with the listening comprehension and pronunciation practice. Most of the reading passages are also recorded, which is a nice touch, although now I'm on the B1 book I'm getting bored of hearing the same voices.
On the whole I really like the Begegnungen books. There is a strong emphasis on exercises and drills and lots of repetition and review, but combined with a thorough syllabus in terms of grammar and vocabulary. But it is 100% German, with very brief explanations for the grammar, so you'll need to have a dictionary / grammar reference to hand to answer your questions. I wouldn't recommend it to someone who has never attempted to learn a language on their own before (I know this doesn't apply to you).

This seems to be with 2 CDs (ISBN10 3929526867) and the same thing but without (ISBN10 394132313X).
(The prices vary wildly - the CD version seems to be cheaper elsewhere ...)

Well Christmas is coming up, so I think I'll suggest some purchases

I expect that the net plus diving back into Hugo every now and then should help me out. I like the idea of plenty of exercises and drills.

Re: dampingwire's 2016 TAC - JP & DE
It seems to me that the CDs are quite essential.
The free version of the App Scribt allows me to read 3 books every month.
I consult it now and then to look for textbooks because for me is really important to "look inside" before buying a course book.
I've just verified one can read Begegnungen A1+ on Scribt (well, I can).
I'm really interested on this book too, and yesterday I looked it with dreaming eyes in a bookshop (I told myself I can buy it only if I finish Assimil).

The book without the CDs is the Lehrerhandbuch (teacher's handbook).

Ah! Thanks for that. I guess German's just like Japanese - the most important information is always right at the end of the sentence!

Re: dampingwire's 2016 TAC - JP & DE
I've just finished the Japanese Pronunciation for Communication course that I mentioned a little while ago.
Overall I think I spent about 8-1/2 hours working through it. I think it was time well spent. I think I need to do much more listening to ebgin to notice pitch accent, and there were plenty of other interesting aspect of the course.
In addition, the videos come with EN and JP transcripts so I can go back and repeat them repeatedly to try to get to the point where I don't need the transcripts ...

Over the past two weeks the amount of time I'm spending in Anki during the day has decreased. The vocab deck is taking ~15m and the sentence deck is down to 45m. I'm holding back on adding anything to either for now, at least until the sentence deck drops below 30m or so.
I've now been through the Japanese Pronunciation for Communication edX course. I must admit I really enjoyed it. Hopefully it will stick around after the end date so I can re-do it after having worked through the Japanese transcripts to familiarise myself with the technical vocabulary.
I've also finished the first pass through the children's book エルマーのぼうけん. I'll go through one more time to pick out and learn vocabulary and then give it another go.
I've worked through the first episode of 偽装の夫婦. I've deliberately held back on watching further episodes before watching #1 more intently because I specifically want to concentrate on what is being said. If I let myself get too involved in the story I'll end up skimping on the intensive listening.
