I tried the first 17 minutes of Ns'あおい (since the obvious place to find it on the net splits it up that way). Obviously it's about a nurse; it seems that at least some of the doctors around her in her new post in what looks like an expensive private hospital seem to be somewhat hopeless. She, on the other hand, seems to have helped save a patient early on. Once the medical jargon started to flow I had no hope, but for the rest of the conversations, I think I caught quite a bit (except when things got excitable or the there were quite lengthy speeches).

I think my comprehension varies quite a bit. I've watched the whole of おとこめし without subtitles, and I could follow along quite well I think. I've no found EN subtitles so I'll re-watch it and see how much I missed. With 潜入捜査アイドル・刑事ダンス for example, I was mostly all at sea: I could pick up short snippets but I had only a vague idea of why anyone was anywhere. 偽装の夫婦 is the one I've been workign through in some detail and 6 episodes in I could watch an episode for the first time with no subtitles and catch the major plot points.

qeadz wrote:Then as a follow-up question, if I may, if you were to give a rough estimate to how many hours you've spent studying Japanese - what would it be?

Overall, about 7000 hours in just over 5 years. I don't have a detailed breakdown but if 2016 is anything to go by then 35% is listening to audio (during the commute or while walking/cycling etc), 40% is reading (but this includes Anki), 15% is watching native drama or anime and maybe 1% would be grammar work or textbook work of some sort. Kanji study was about 20 hours, so basically in the noise as a percentage.

I think my passive vocabulary (when reading) is in the 8000-9000 word range. I need to speed up my reading, but what I really need to do is to up my listening comprehension. So I'm now focussing on working through dramas in some detail and then just watching carefully when I get too bored with slogging through a given episode intensively.

Thank you so much for the candid reply!

Your exposure/study of Japanese is quite considerable. While everything about your situation including your target language(s) differs from my own, it's a data point for me when setting my own expectations.

Your comments on the medical terminology made me think though: much of the specific terminology when watching programming in one's native language is not understood anyway. I watch dramas set in hospitals and if you quizzed me on it, I'd be unable to explain half the terminology used anyway. My wife, who is a nurse, could explain the terminology and as such she laughs at the incoherent use of it.

Similarly my wife would not be able to explain half the terminology used in TV series' involving hackers. However I could, and as such it never ceases to amuse me how the words are just randomly sprinkled into the dialog as 'technobabble' without any care to their actual meaning or usage.

So I guess it really comes down to how well you follow the story outside of the specific terminology. At any rate it is going to take me 20 YEARS to amass the amount of exposure you have. wow.

As of the end of next week my position at work will be made redundant. Since early February work hasn't really been too much of a burden (since we all knew what was coming) so I should have been able to get some serious language learning done. Well, things didn't work out quite that smoothly. I had a bunch of loose ends to tie up in the office (the last few of which I expect to tie up this week, I hope) and then there was the whole job hunting thing to do. Although I can see that the amount of studying done has fluctuated, overall there has not been a huge improvement in study time. For better or worse (OK, much better financially, perhaps not so for my Japanese and German) I have a new job and will be starting that just after Easter. Hopefully, after the initial bedding into a new office period, I should be able to get back to a steady routine.

I've been doing more bike riding during this period, so the amount of audio I've listened to has not changed that much compared to when I was commuting almost daily. Anki and RTK have been moving along as expected. My tutorials have continued almost without interruption.

There have been two changes to my routine. I've started to work through 日本語総まとめ N2 文法, revising at the ace of one "book day" almost every day. I have the 日本語総まとめ N2 文法 Day 7 exercises printed, ready to tackle once I reach the end of the book. I was going to tackle them as I finished each subsequent chapter, but that's gone by the wayside, so I'll wait until the end of the book now. To supplement this grammar work I've been working through the 新完全マスター N2 文法 sentences and I've started to get them checked by my tutor.

The other (unintentional) change is that the amount of Japanese drama I've been watching has dropped drastically. I finished working through 偽装の夫婦 intensively and I didn't have anything else lined up to take its place, so I didn't pay much attention to it and it just sort of lapsed. I do have three new series lined up, so hopefully I can start to fix that problem over the next week or so.

I'm now trying to get back into the swing of things, trying to concentrate on listening a bit more too.

Anki and RTK are going to plan: I'm keeping up with all the reviews and I'm activating sentences from 日本語総まとめ N2 文法(I have about 400 more to activate as of today). I'm also working through the sentences from 新完全マスター N2 文法, providing English translations as I go. I'll get some (maybe most) of these checked by my tutor. I'm finding that over 80% of them give me no problems at all, and then 10% of them I get badly wrong or can't make head nor tail of at all. The final 10% end up leading to some interesting discussions about meanings of words or kanji or Japanese culture in general.

I've finally finished all 256 episodes of ふるさと再生 日本の昔ばなし. They are kids tales, but I find them quite interesting and they're split into three 8 minute chunks, which makes for easy viewing in odd moments. Season 2 has just started on crunchyroll, so there's plenty more for me to watch. I've also started スミカスミレ~45歳若返った女, an oddball little series. I'm going to watch this one straight through in Japanese with no subtitles of any kind. Then I'll start whatever I watch next, while also doubling back and working through this series with Japanese subs and then English subs (if I find any) and then work through it slowly.

I've got just under two weeks worth of 日本語総まとめ N2 文法 chapters to work through. The combination of going through the book at the intended daily rate (which I can manage because by this stage 70% of it is revision) combined with lots of sentence repetition through Anki does seem to be paying dividends.Once I get to the end I'll start to do the same thing with 新完全マスター N2 文法, while going back over the Day 7 exercises in 総まとめ.

Tutorials are going well too. Progress through みんなの日本語中級 is taking maybe 6 to 8 weeks per chapter. Partly that's because I have all this extra stuff I bring along to discuss and partly because we're covering almost every exercise in the book. I imagine that I'll have sat December's JLPT N2 before みんなの日本語中級 is finished. I've not thought too hard about what would be next. I suppose either working through the 新完全マスター N2 reading book or starting on the 新完全マスター N1 books (assuming I pass N2). No need to worry about it right now though ...

I've managed to watch スミカスミレ~45歳若返った女 all trhe way through (8 episodes) without using subtitles and I think I have a reasonable idea of what happened. Now I need to watch it with subtitles to check that I was actually close!

I've revised all the grammar in 日本語総まとめ N2 文法 so now I need to work through the exercises while starting to work through 新完全マスター N2 文法. Having all the sentences active in Anki will help, so I'm pushing forward with that too.

Anki and RTK are bumbling along as usual.

I've started to listen more intensively to JPOD101 Advanced Audio Blog Season 4. The first ten episodes are about famous Japanese authors, so it will be useful background info as well as useful listening comprehension practice.

4 days last week were happily spent in Barcelona. No Spanish or Catalan was learned, but it did eat into the Japanese listening time. I did use the flight time (out and back) to listen to JPOD101 but there was no time to do anything else. On Monday I started my new job and soon I'll be spending some time in the Florida HQ. So there's going to be a (hopefully temporary) dip in my language studying effort.

I started the new job on Monday and, as expected, I've had to concentrate on that (and on the preparations for the trip to Florida).

I have started a new series, IQ246 華麗なる事件簿. I've also started the second series of ふるさと再生 日本の昔ばなし. I plan to take a laptop with me to Florida loaded with more series, some subtitles and some JPOD101 Advanced Audio blogs plus some books for the flights. Hopefully that will allow me to get some studying done (assuming that the work and entertainment don't eat up all the time!).

Apart from watching the new series and some 昔ばなし, the rest of the week has been RTK and Anki.

On my PC I keep a separate Anki profile for each language, so I have one for Japanese and one for German. That keeps them conveniently separated and also stops Anki warning about having too many decks. AnkiDroid, however, doesn't seem to support profiles. On my phone I have the German decks and there seems no way to have the Japanese decks on there too (without going through some hoops with unsupported versions). So I'm taking a second (cheap, old) phone along and I've loaded the Japanese decks onto that. Hopefully that will allow me to keep up the reviews while I am away.

Today was a Bank Holiday, so with Florida eating up two more Mondays, that means 3 weeks without a tutorial. I have copies of a few pages of みんなの日本語 printed out, so hopefully I'll not forget everything while I'm away!

So two weeks in Florida later, how did I get on. Well not surprisingly I didn't get that much done. Well I did consume 10h45m of Japanese while travelling outbound but then most days I barely had any time to study. That's OK: I wasn't out there to study :-)

I've caught up with anki and I have a few more series lined up ready to go.

I have had one tutorial since returning but the next one is almost two weeks away because of the intervening bank holiday.

At least I didn't forget everything while I was out there.
