Someone at work sent me a link to a live Japanese radio station.

Obviously the Christmas holidays have taken their toll, but I two new German textbooks to work through, so that's OK
Not much has happened over the Christmas period. I've managed to fit in Anki (total time now down to about 50 minutes/day) and RTK (which is less than 5 minutes/day), but apart from watching 偽装の夫婦 (intensively) a few times, I've done very little. I have kept up my audio listening when I've been out on the bike or walking or commuting, but that's really it.
Looking back at my plans for 2016, I'm not sure I actually stuck to them
Oh yes, I'll certainly join East Asian TAC 2017. If I see a German TAC 2017, I'll probably join that one too.
Well I obviously didn't de-prioritise Anki; well I did for a bit but then I let it back in.
I have done some reading of novels, but not enough.
I've done plenty of listening, but not as much intensive listening as I would have liked.
I did read NHK News quite often, but, again, nowhere near often enough.
Actually, looking back, that was quite a good plan. I'll probably have a go at doing that for Japanese in 2017. I also need to think about whether I should take the JLPT N2 (probably in December rather than July).
German didn't really have a plan, so I think I can say that I stuck to that quite well! I have now made listening to Pimsleur German I part of my routine. That's helped me pick up some very basic German and also shown me quite conclusively that I'm simply not going to get anywhere at all with just Pimsleur! Hugo's German In 3 Months didn't get me going either.
My new A1 textbook has maybe 200 pages. At 4 pages per week I should get through it in a year. But I also have the A2 textbook. Is it too ambitious to try to get to A2 while also trying to up my level of Japanese? Well if I don't try I won't know. So I'll aim to finish the A2 textbook by the end of the year. I'll try working through the textbook for the next fortnight and see how I get on. Then I should be able to put together a plan that I can try to stick to.

The forum seems to be moving away from TAC teams toward permanent revolving study groups, so while East Asian decided to do a 2017 TAC team, there's a general German group instead of a TAC team.

Ah. I've already found the German study gfroup.
I notice that the East Asian TAC is relabelling itself as a study group too.
We'll see what 2017 brings

Re: dampingwire's JP & DE
I've updated the title to remove the year and the TAC reference. I could have left the TAC bit in but as this forum seems to be moving away from that I might as well simplify. It can always be edited back in if the winds blow the other way!

Re: dampingwire's JP & DE
Looking back at January and the first week of February, I see the usual Anki, RTK, grammar work for my tutorials and listening to audio during the commute.
I did do some intensive listening of a few of the 日本の昔ばなし but I'm going to switch back to doing this with the JPOD101 Advanced Audio Blogs, as I think that will give me more bang for the buck. There's also a little NHK News and a smidgen of grammar work from 日本語総まとめ N2 文法.
The thing that I've been really pushing is working through some J-Drama. 偽装の夫婦 is the one for which I have both JP and EN subs and so that one has been getting the majority of the attention. Each episode is 50 minutes long. I watch each one first with no subs and then with JP subs, both at full speed with no pauses. Then I work through the episode much more slowly, bit by bit, using the JP and EN subs to make sense of it. That's about 2-1/2 hours (but in several goes, not one long session). Then finally I watch one more time at full speed but with EN subs. I think it is beginning to have an effect: on my first run through episode 6 with no subs I picked up on all the major plot points and a fair chunk of the dialogue detail made sense. Obviously there were nuances I missed, and during the long and fast speeches, I missed most of the detail, although I could still often get the gist. That continued with episode 7 too, so hopefully I've not just caught an easy episode or two! At the same time I've been watching a silly little drama called 潜入捜査アイドル・刑事ダンス, for which I have no subs at all. That one made very little sense, so I haven't magically developed a perfect ear for Japanese. Still, it's a noticeable improvement and it's certainly encouraging me to keep ploughing through the episodes in detail.
The weekly Japanese lessons and reading group are continuing at work, and I think that those are helping me with actually producing Japanese and also improving my reading speed.

No, impressive would be "fluent" or "can understand drama perfectly without subtitles"
67 hours of that was audio listened to either during the commute or while walking or cycling. I doubt that's as effective as actively studying audio while sitting at my desk, although it's a good use of otherwise wasted time.
I am quite pleased by the 30 hours of video consumed: that's either attentively watching or intensively working through an episode, line by line. That certainly seems to be helping with my listening comprehension: although 5 years into this journey I really feel I should be better somehow!

Re: dampingwire's JP & DE
I'm interested to know how you rate your first-time comprehension for regular Japanese programming? If you pick up a random not-too-serious drama and watch the first episode without having had any exposure to the language or characters in the drama, how well are you able to follow it?
Then as a follow-up question, if I may, if you were to give a rough estimate to how many hours you've spent studying Japanese - what would it be?
