中級 (ちゅうきゅう) - intermediate level

The original series was みんなの日本語初級, where 初級 (しょきゅう) is beginner level.

There's no sign of a 上級 (じょうきゅう) level in the series yet.

Hugo's German in 3 Months

Postby dampingwire » Sat Jul 30, 2016 9:56 pm

I've not formulated a proper study plan for this book yet. I don't think I'm going to have enough time to actually get through it in 3 months, at least not if I study each chapter properly. Instead I'm going to allow myself until the end of the year, so about 5 months.

I'll consider a chapter to be complete when I've logged all the vocabulary into Anki, read through the whole chapter and understood it and also completed all of the exercises.

I'm not going to log all the studying I do. Instead I'm going to aim to study 3 times a week for 30 mins (or more if I can manage it). I'll log here as I complete each chapter. I'll review my pace when I reach the end of chapter 2 and adjust my study time accordingly.

Here are my figures as to how long the book takes, though my figures are for Hugo's Swedish in 3 Months. I did it after intermediate German and after 10 hours of other Swedish book+CD courses which weren't too useful. After the 2nd wave below, I felt pretty confident, and after the 3rd wave, very confident.

1st wave - Reading lessons skipping exercises - 6.8 hours
2nd wave - Reading lessons and doing exercises - 23.0 hours
3rd wave - Doing exercises - 15.0 hours

Total = 44.8 hours over 20 days so minimal forgetting

So over the last 3 weeks I've been concentrating on two things.

Firstly, while keeping my みんなの日本語中級 vocab deck under control, I've been activating sentences, but not doing any other sentence reviews. I managed to activate 3000 sentences, which is about 100 per day. In fact at the beginning of the month I was managing more like 200 per day but by the end it had dropped to about 50 per day. That, I think, is mostly because the early ones involved vocabulary that I already knew well and the later ones started to throw up more new vocabulary and also more vocabulary that is normally written in kana but happened to be in kanji in some sentences.I still have just over 2,200 sentences to go to work through the whole of the 6,000 sentences from iKnow, so I think I'll keep going with the activations all through August. I have also been throwing in the occasional batch of sentences from DOIJG but I think I'll stop that for now and just concentrate on the iKnow sentences.

I did think a few weeks ago that I'd finished getting all the sentences from 日本語総まとめ N3 文法 activated and, where necessary, getting the translations checked. I've now verified that I've just got 7 sentences left to get checked and all the others have been activated. When I get the chance, I'll go through the same exercise with the 新完全マスター N3 文法 sentences, which are (I think) mostly activated and mostly checked.

My other main focus has been watching drama, with and without subtitles, and also going through various episodes more intensively. I've been using コールセンターの恋人 for this and I've found the process quite useful. However, I've not been able to locate any Japanese subtitles for this series, so I've had to resort to listening repeatedly to try and work out what is being said based onw hat I think I can hear, what the English subtitles claim and what I can glean from online dictionaries. That's quite a slow process. So once I finish with this series I'll go back to ドラゴン桜, for which I have Japanese subtitles, and this time I'll work through it more diligently.

Other than that, I've managed to get going again on a little grammar work. I'm going to finish off the exercises in 新完全マスター N3 文法 soon(ish) and then I'll make a start on the N2 books I have. I've found working through the N3 sentences certainly seems to have helped to cement some of the grammar slightly more firmly in my head, so I'm hoping that the same improvement will happen for the N2 stuff.

Even though I'm not going to track my German in a spreadsheet like I do for Japanese, I will try to track the approximate amount of work I do and log it here occasionally (because otherwise I suspect I won't do anything at all :-)) so your times should at least provide me with a rough idea of what to expect. Thanks.

Re: Hugo's German in 3 Months

I finally started to work through Hugo's German in 3 Months. In my defense, I was away quite a bit next week, so this week was the earliest I was ever likely to start.

I'm initially going to skip Chapter 1 (Pronunciation rules). Instead I'm going to use forvo or similar to learn the pronunciation of words as I add them to anki and then I'll go back and review Chapter 1 once I have some experience of how German is supposed to sound.

Anyway, I mined some vocabulary from Chapter 2 for about 30 minutes this evening.

Assimil is great for getting a feel for how the language sounds like.

Looking back over the past two weeks, I see that I've managed to get through a reasonable amount of video. In fact I've been working through コールセンターの恋人 an episode at a time, with subs then without subs then intensively and finally one more time without subs. That's taken some time but I think it was worth it. I did find it quite a bother trying to hear what was said at times as some of the speakers were less than clear and there were also times when things got loud and angry. I have found various single episodes or subsets of episodes of other series online with either Japanese subtitles or Japanese + English. So I'm going to work through some of these, listening wit hthe help of the Japanese subtitles to see how I get on.

I've also been keeping up with reading on NHK News. I decided that the Emperor's recent announcement was interesting enough that I've been working through it in detail in my tutorial. The sentences are long and windy but there are some interesting grammar points in there. Sometimes they are points I know but don't recognise because they are in a slightly different form and sometimes they have been new. All good interesting stuff.

I've kept up my Anki kanji vocab subset deck and I'm slowly working through my backlog while keeping the most recent vocab fresh. In my sentence deck I've been making steady progress at activating the sentences from the iKnow website. I have a few hundred left to activate, which should be done by the end of August. After that I'll work on my sentence backlog. There are quite a few new (to me) words in there that I've noticed fly by, so I'll obviously be concentrating on those sentences in September.
