Re: Xmmm's Russian log

Русский

I'm continuing to listen to and read transcripts of особое имение. I'm still struggling with the fact that 8 hours a week is just listening to the show in the car -- where I'm capable of zoning out. I don't feel those hours are as high quality as when I was doing Glossika and forced to respond. But I don't really want to go back to Glossika ... and my commute is my commute.

I think if and when my Odinsbarn audio cd ever arrives, I might start splitting the time in the car between Russian and Norwegian. This will reduce the total number of Russian hours I'm putting in, but the hours I do log will be higher quality on average.

I don't know if Duolingo + Memrise is the greatest strategy of all time, but it's certainly a very available strategy for Norwegian. I guess I will finish both courses (the Memrise course goes to 3000 words) and then do L/R with Odinsbarn ... if it has arrived by then ...

This has been a double plus ungood week for me in many, many ways. I think (hope) the unwelcome excitement is winding down.

Русский

Even особое мнение turned against me this week. Usually the interviews are lively and interesting, but this week there was just a pocket of really tedious ones -- or maybe it was the same two I tried to read ten times each. One was by a frequent guest who's an ultra patriot, a blowhard, and basically has a one note song. The other went into procedural minutia of Moscow City Hall.

The good news is that Odinsbarn arrived, after only 21 days!

I paid an obscene amount of money for a paperback book and audio cds, but I must say that physically it's a quality product. It will be hard for me to start marking it up with a highlighter.

I can't say whether the writing is good or not, but judging from sentence and word length it definitely looks "young adult". I took a look at the first page and understood little. Which is not surprising, but does make this 600 page book a daunting task.

Looking forward to joining the bookclub with you and the others!

I'm only going to buy the ebook. Shipping is prohibitive, and ordering an audiobook would mean paying twice the price in dollars, and at the current ratio, no way, no, but it's fine with the ebook.

You think you can read better in Russian than in Norwegian?

:D

I've put 548 hours into Russian and 38 hours into Norwegian .... so I hope I can read better in Russian!

But I think if I had 500 hours in Russian and 150 hours in Norwegian, it would be a toss up.

The last month has been not fun. Family medical emergency, urgent work needed on the house, disrupted work schedule, unexpected bills, etc. Things are better now but hardly back to normal.

Somehow I more or less held on to language goals. I got some reading in Russian done and did a little Duolingo and Memrise for Norwegian.

But I've completely lost track of hours and lost interest in tracking that kind of metric. I guess I would say that learning Russian takes an average person like me a long time. Based on my first 500 hours I would expected to be intermediate at 1000 hours, and proficient at 2000 hours. And probably never get above proficient, honestly.

I'm not learning Russian, but it's on my hit list so I stalk your log from time to time. When times are tough, I consider it an accomplishment just to crack open a book in my target language, so I wouldn't be so hard on yourself. After all, it's the long term consistency that counts, not the few bad times here and there. Stick with it and you'll reach a level that you're happy with. Good luck.

In my experience improvement is not a smooth trajectory and of course there is the famous intermediate plateau. My hunch from reading your log is that you are more than capable of reaching a high standard, it's just a matter of keeping going. In short I wouldn't pay too much attention to the metrics you are using, or any nagging doubts - both have tendency to deceive.

I highly recommend Летят журавли, available free on youtube. The story itself is nothing special, but Tatiana Samoilova gives a tour de force performance. The direction and cinematography are also--stunning. This film is more than fifty years old -- shame on modern films that can't do better!

I had a setback here as the makers of the Duolingo course 'helpfully' rolled out the 2.0 version. My 40-something gold tasks got ungolded, and the number of tasks ballooned from 75 to 115. I'm supposed to be enthused because now I can learn even more norsk with duolingo. But my hope had been to run through an introductory course quickly and then start stumbling through the book that is waiting for me.

For now, I'm just trying to boost my time commitment to the course so that I can still finish it around the same time (middle of June?).

The Norsk Duolingo is a very thorough course. It's another league when compared to Russian, for example. The individual sentences are longer, the lessons have more sentences and the chapters, more lessons. So don't feel frustrated if you can't finish it quickly, it's not supposed to be just a warm up for another course, but more than that. It's also very picky when it comes to writing a translation with the correct articles. When I did it I used to spend some 40 minutes or more on two chapters which then consisted of 8-9 lessons with over 20 sentences each. It was still that time when each sentence got wrong meant to answer 3 sentences more, instead of just repeat that one sentence in the end. And yet I think I picked the wrong moment. I should have waited till my passive skills were more clearly towards B2 so I could expect to activate more vocabulary i knew vaguely instead of running into it for the first time.

Edit: wrongly referenced to C2 passive instead of B2.

I've been using beeminder (hat tip to emk) for about two months now and am very happy with it.

I chose five goals very carefully and set the weekly pace for each to about half of the maximum I thought I could do in a good week. Now, I don't have to expend any mental energy on tracking. I was probably using 5% of my total mental energy for obsessive tracking, so beeminder is a big deal for me.

You can see here that I need to read at least 2907 words in Russian today or I will "derail" and suffer financial penalties. On the other hand my "Russian films and TV" is good for the next eight days. So if I have to choose between watching Interns and reading something, there is no decision to make. I have to read first and maybe watch Interns later.

Русский

I do want to refocus on Interns. I stopped watching at episode #34 about three months ago, because it was just too troublesome to read the transcripts before watching. Back then my comprehension was about 5%-10% (obviously I understood plenty from seeing what was happening on the screen, but I only understood 5-10% of the Russian). It is more like 20% now which is still not great but at least I notice the improvement. I think I'd like to binge watch 3-4 episodes every weekend.

Since Duolingo Norwegian 2.0 has over 3200 words, I've dropped the memrise course. I've only got about 20 minutes a day for Norwegian, and I need to focus on finishing duo before they release version 3.0. :)
