I'm not shocked at this. I have a younger brother and sisters, twins adopted from South Korea. My younger brother went back to Korea and taught English as a second language. Before leaving, he studied Korean. His progress was substantially faster and stronger than his efforts at French and Spanish. This is someone who had essentially no exposure to Korean for many years.

If I'm going to be completely scientific and objective, I would have to point out that French was just a high school subject and Spanish was something tacked on for a few trips to Cuba. Korean was very real-world, very practical. Motivation makes a big difference in language learning.
