The Anki method without recalling
What do you think about using Anki only for exposure, without memorization and recalling?

How are you going to mark the cards if you don't test yourself in some way?

I`m going to use Anki only as an exposure tool and pass cards only 4 days forward every time till I get the feeling that I`m familiar with a certain card.

Re: The Anki method without recalling
One of my annoyances with anki is that it doesn't easily let me use it the way you say.
I learned about 7000 words of Samoan with wordlists, simply by relearning each list on day 1, 2, 4,8, and 16.
I missed the extra that anki gives for hard words, but since I rememorized the words each time I did them, I knew them all pretty well by the end.
This method kept me from having a constantly building set of words to review each day.

Interesting. How many words contained each of your wordlists?

I'm not totally sure if there's a fixed delay. From my experience, the delay for Again, Hard, Good and Easy depends on my previous gradings. If it's four days today, it won't be four days the next time I see the word. The only thing I'm somewhat sure of is that the words I want too see "Again" will show up in a short while.
If exposure is all you want (and Anki is the program you want to use) I think you could use the "cram" option without messing up your original deck.

Imo it's not as convenient or as engaging as using a mouse-over dictionary, which pretty much does the same thing. As I said before, this is essentially a compromise between the old paper intensive and extensive reading.

When you are using a frequency wordlist or dictionary it is quite convinient imo but, yes, playing with creating flashcards for Anki is pretty time consuming unless you use the sfuqua`s method.

Re: The Anki method without recalling
So at this point I would consider myself to have had a lot of expierence creating flashcards for various platforms, including Anki. If you do a simple L1 on one side and L2 on the other card it takes a sheer lack of time. Open up a spreadsheet, type in the word in one cell, type in the translation in the adjacent cell. It's not that complicated and depending on where you're getting the words, extraordinarily fast.Voytek wrote:When you are using a frequency wordlist or dictionary it is quite convinient imo but, yes, playing with creating flashcards for Anki is pretty time consuming unless you use the sfuqua`s method.
You can then import that file (saved in one of the formats Anki recognizes) into Anki.
My current Anki flashcard venture takes significantly more time because there are four fields, I'm not using a premade list of words, and I'm getting the info for those fields from at least three different places, but that isn't what Anki cards have to look like.

Much of the work that I've done with Anki is essentially based on this idea. I've used sentence comprehension cards and subs2srs cards, and I score them based on how well I can comprehend them. This produces lovely results for way less effort single word translation cards, which I eventually came to loathe, due to ambiguities and difficulty. So here's one vote for the theory that Anki is actually a better tool for managing repeated exposure in context than it is for straight-up memorization.
