Hi all,
My language learning preparation is now underway (information on my blog https://learn23eublog.wordpress.com/), so I would be grateful for any tips which you might have.
I will update my blog every Thursday and post on this forum from time to time.

Re: Learn all 24 EU languages
Depends on which IPA you mean. It's good to get out of the habit of writing everything with the way English does, like ah, ee etc. I learned the whole IPA as a linguist but each language uses its subset anyway, with the same symbols being used for slightly different sounds.SophiaMerlin_II wrote:I'm somewhat interested in how people would approach this if it were their goal.
With this many different languages in this time frame, would you consider it important to learn IPA? So that, for example, with SRS, you could have a "true" pronunciation on the back.
Obviously, an input heavy approach would be difficult, given the amount of time available. Would people suggest L2 -> TL instructional materials, so that one would be able to spend more time out of NL?
Would you create shorthand ways of writing down grammar rules for various languages? Would you real parallel texts in 2 languages? How much speaking practice would you aim for in each?
I never did this sort of SRS cards. If you want to practise the pronunciation, it's generally best to use a recording.
I definitely recommend L2-L3 materials (including dictionaries) and parallel texts However my view is the opposite in terms of input - unless you have an actual need to speak, drop the textbooks as much as possible and just do input. Input can't be skipped anyway, you need it especially to understand what people tell you.
I prefer to have a silent period and then speak when I'm ready, or when an opportunity arises.
My goal is similar to that of the OP but I don't set deadlines for myself

Wow that sounds very challenging. Although, you've set a time-frame that seems suitable I think. I can only wish you good luck, you can do it!

Re: Learn all 24 EU languages
Hi,
Here is a quick update on my 24 EU language challenge https://learn23eublog.wordpress.com/
Over the last month, I've been working really hard on my Spanish pronunciation (I've decided to learn Castilian Spanish instead of Latin American Spanish).
If anyone is interested, I've recorded a video of my level of Spanish, after one month http://bit.ly/2a5XIvJ
I would be grateful if you could let me know your thoughts and give me any tips.
At the moment, when I speak Spanish it doesn't feel natural to me and, in my head, I'm still translating from English to Spanish.

I think the stress in "gustaría" is on the accented syllable, not the second syllable.

Re: Learn all 24 EU languages
It’s been over 11 months since I decided to undertake the challenge of learning 23 EU languages.
So what’s my progress?
On 12th and 13th of May, I sat the B1 Spanish exam.
Before I tell you how I think it went (I won’t get my result until August), I should mention the obstacles/struggles which I have been faced with mainly over the last 4 months.
1) Managing my time
2) Being unable to resist the urge to improve my Russian instead of focussing on Polish and Spanish
3) Finding the right balance between passive (Reading and listening) and productive learning (Writing and speaking)
4) Finally, illness
The last obstacle completely derailed my plans. On and off, I have been sick for about 3 months. In fact, on the first day of my exam, I was really ill. I now know how to say ‘Tengo el ojo inflamado’.
I think I did ok with the reading, listening and writing comprehensions but I struggled with the oral exam. It was frustrating because I could understand everything the examiner was saying.
In regards to Polish, it’s really hard to find a place to take the B2 exam. I’m thinking about taking it in Poznan at the end of this year.

Re: Learn all 24 EU languages
My motivation used to be all about trying to be the best but now I'm motivated by knowing that little steps can lead to bigger achievements. Over the past 11 months, I have made some really good friends who have not only helped me with my language learning but have also given me an insight into different cultures.

Re: Learn all 24 EU languages
I just found this thread, and it looks like an interesting project!
One method that occurred to me would be to find language textbooks for your next language in one of your previous languages. It isn't hard to find French and German based textbooks for loads of languages, but you might want to scout around for textbooks in some of your other languages. This would definitely help you with maintenance of one language while learning another.
