Learn a language with your skin

Josua Kohberg has been working for 20 years to enable people to learn a new language quickly and easily. He founded KOSYS GmbH in his adopted hometown of Coburg and developed a revolutionary system with which a foreign language can be acquired within two to three months, with almost no effort and completely incidentally. The basis is language lessons whose design makes it easy for the brain to memorise sentences and understand them. In addition, there is a high-tech device called neoos®. At first glance, it looks like a smartphone, but inside there is technology that can be used to convey learning content via ultrasound. The human ear cannot hear messages in this frequency range, but it can pick them up through the skin. In this way, the neoos® almost inaudibly "feeds" the unconscious level with the new language for eight to ten hours a day via two contacts connected to the skin. And this is done with dialogues spoken exclusively by native speakers. These are combined with the language lessons, to which one devotes about half an hour a day. Thanks to word-for-word translation, the learner immediately understands what the sentences mean without having to cram grammar. "Not only have numerous engineers worked on the system, we also cooperate with several universities and technical colleges," Kohberg explains. Studies show: Within eight to twelve minutes, the neoos® puts the user in a relaxed state in which his or her brain physiology offers optimal conditions for absorbing learning content.

By using the body's own ultrasound frequencies, you can hear with the neoos® via the skin instead of the ears.

Just €1,250 for the apparatus. I'm in.

(I also once made soup out of a rusty nail. It was delicious).

I have always felt that what was really holding me back with listening comprehension was the fact I was only using my ears to do it.

I feel like someone was reading a French research paper and mistranslated « haute fréquence » (high frequency) into German as „Hautfrequenz“ (skin frequency) and nobody caught it until the product was already made so they just went with it.

I wonder if it can be used while sleeping too?

For those still in doubt, here is a video about this new revolutionary method.

:-D Is it a thread meant for jokes about this trash, or are you serious, Kraut?

This is actually not that new in principle. I even went to a language course ages ago, which used a specific headphone to make you listen with the bone conduction. (Yep, my parents were desperate of my failures to learn English.) It was just a normal class that would have been the same without the machine. And no, it didn't help much (only self studying with the right motivation years later worked. Perhaps I would have learnt English years earlier, had my parents promised to ensure the teacher being fired for bullying as a reward :-D ).

But unlike the "skin conduction", the bone conduction of sound is at least a scientific fact (even though differently, than what the machine was supposed to do).

Not everybody calling themselves a neuroscientist are one. Neuroscience is actually taught in a certain manner even in the marketing degrees (there are some dark sides of psychology uses and abuses, not every science researcher or user is a well meaning person). So, I have lots of doubts about this.

I am not unreasonably sceptical towards everything. There are some tools, that transform known but not too practical medical methods into such devices to be used at home. For example luminotherapy is a perfectly valid tool, used in psychiatry. I have it in the form of glasses, to help fix my sleep-wake rythm. Proven by studies, sound logic behind it, works well (and as I really suffer from lack of light during the winters, I appreciate this help). There are rather reliable tools like an at home "EEG" to help you learn meditation. I've tried. I am not good at it, but I saw the machine do what it was supposed to, and the expectations and promises are very reasonable. I am even rather open to another thing I've tried (a colleague of mine was really into such stuff!),which is a sort of headphones, which stimulate your cortex electrically (safely!), transcranial stimulation is a also a well known thing that is researched heavily and even clinically used. The tool is supposed to make your sport or music (or other motoric memory based skill) practice more efficient. I wasn't using it consistently enough, but the reasoning and studies seemed rather ok. I don't know enough about a different transcranial stimulation device, supposed to help with depression, that's already a bit suspicious and I would be wary of recommending anybody to use this without a recommendation from a doctor experienced in such methods.

Isn't it funny, how scared people are of so many things, how horrible and frightening they find the idea of normal electrotherapy (which is nowadays very different from the past and actually proven to be much more gentle than heavy medication), but are eager to buy a machine supposed to affect your body and brain unnaturaly? Just promise them to learn a language in a few weeks, that's all it takes.

I'd say the machine mentioned in this thread sounds like nonsense. People love the promises of easy and fast results far too much.

The basis is language lessons whose design makes it easy for the brain to memorise sentences and understand them. And this is done with dialogues spoken exclusively by native speakers. These are combined with the language lessons, to which one devotes about half an hour a day. Thanks to word-for-word translation, the learner immediately understands what the sentences mean without having to cram grammar.

So, like many other tools, just more expensive, and with a new gadget. Hmm, would you pay a thousand euro for a coursebook with a revolutionary scratching machine, that will scratch your back while learning, to make you more relaxed and receptive? And will you attribute success to the scratching? :-D

technology that can be used to convey learning content via ultrasound.

This is very convenient too! No random user can see, whether the machine even does anything! Unless your pet dog, whale, or bat will tell you :-D Reminds me of the Emperor's New Clothes.

By using the body's own ultrasound frequencies, you can hear with the neoos® via the skin instead of the ears.

I am not a specialist in neuro-something tools for learning. But I find it a little bit weird, that as an MD, with a bit of experience and education in the basics of neuroscience, and with long term interest in learning methods, I have never ever encountered this. Not even "our own ultrasound frequencies" (even though I've met a few people capable of screaming really high :-D ), hearing through skin (what this company promises is very different from a slightly related thing, the ways some deaf people enjoy the beat of music for example), etc.

edit:fixed a grammar error

I developed a method where I speak onto the point of a needle of a tattoo gun, then tattoo the language into the client's skin. I admit it does have its drawbacks; you need to be a fast learner or you end up completely tattooed.

In light of this I'm trialling a new method where I put my hand on your head (like the Pope) and I just talk in a natural way, in any accent the client chooses; angry Glaswegian is popular, along with 'British Hollywood-film villain'.

This time next year Rodney, we'll be millionaires!

I thought the studies all said that it works for most people if monitored and adjusted by a professional to match the specific user, but that an off-the-shelf unit has no guarantees of stimulating the right areas....?
