When you arrive in a Romanian town and buy a pocket dictionary before you buy your first meal there. And use it to look up what ink is called in Romanian ("cerneală") so that you can ask the shop assistant in Romanian whether they have got it.

Same old office, new sign on the door. (A surprise from one of my colleagues - I saw it on my first day at work this year. )

When you'd like to read a famous author but you haven't yet started learning his language, so you reject all translations and wait for when you'll get around to studying the language so that you can finally read him.

When you buy a $100 chalkboard so you can write down words and sentences in German, and your girlfriend tells you that's dumb and you should've used that money to take her out, but you don't...

When you decide to see a serious drama movie* in a language you don't understand, because you're curious how the experience of not understanding a language for that length of time would be.
When you have to repeatedly reassure the theatre employee that, yes, you know the movie is in a language you don't speak, and there will be no subtitles.
When you do, in fact, enjoy the experience.
* "1945", in Hungarian

Re: You know you're a language nerd when…
...when you play tic-tac-toe using Chinese characters…
Instead of using ○ and×, in each game you use different characters which cannot be reused.
For example:
○ ○ ×
×
○ × ○
If we use the characters 中 and 国, the game above would be:
中中国
国
中国中
The characters 中 and 国 cannot be used anymore and dictionary is not allowed until one of the parties give up on playing tic-tac-toe.
...when you play tic-tac-toe using compound Chinese characters:
攀高 攀高 速递
速递
攀高 速递 攀高
...when you play tic-tac-toe using four-character idioms:
脫穎而出 脫穎而出 一絲不苟
一絲不苟
脫穎而出 一絲不苟 脫穎而出
We did some variations in both simplified and traditional characters. We also used some characters used in China x Japan (车x車), Japan x Taiwan (学x學), Korean idioms expressed in characters x Hangul (公明正大 x 공명정대).
In the end, we played 432 games, having covered some hundred characters. Lastly, I have to say that there was a draw.
