Quick question anyone here either an interpreter or a translator? How did you work towards those jobs (If based in the UK)? I know how for BSL but not sure how for other language/s ????

Hi Jenny. I looked into it previously. It looks like you have to take a course for it, at least for the qualification I was looking at. I don't know if there is more than one recognised qualification, these were all for jobs working in the public sector in hospitals, schools, police stations and the like. A useful site might be the Chartered Institute of Linguists. There is also a facebook group for people who are in these professions here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/206156592853574/. The DipTrans from the CIoL is really targeted at people who have a lot of experience in translating already. I knew someone who sat it directly after a masters in translation... and failed.

Translation isn't a fully professionalised job, and mostly freelance, so you should be thinking about building a portfolio, even if that means doing voluntary work (for worthwhile charities, obviously).

I'm now answering, not because I can actually help, but because you might think I could have.

I do academic translations, previously based in Germany but now in the US, still doing stuff for US and German institutions. I've don't translation work for UK universities, and it's always been someone emails or calls out of the blue with "so-and-so recommend you..."

It's always been a side thing, and always word of mouth. I wish I could help you more - but just in case you go looking and see me writing about having done translation work, I figured better I say that I can't help than you think I'm being an ass and choosing not to help.

Sorry, I wrote a reply which didn't post (SQL errors, what else). Thanks for the info. It's good to know that the diploma is reserved for experienced translators, although it's not my current interest. I may well want to do some (low key) translation in the future. I don't mind working for free, either.
